My new 2004 1150 GSA not happy

Hi, intermittent problems are a nightmare!!! I'm not sure if this helps. However, I had a very similar problem with my 1996 R80GS Basic, cutting out at lights and junctions etc. Also the odd backfire. Always started up instantly. I did all the obvious such as clean carbs, fuel filters, ht leads plugs etc. It turned out to be an ignition issue so I had to change the amplifier which was £48. Works perfect now. I have an 1150gsa but not experienced that issue. Sorry if this doesn't help! Do keep us informed.

why not start with the simple things ? start at the beginning , and work forwards .
is there water in the tank ?
i use a clear tube , so i can see what comes out.
clear = all good
cloudy =water/ethanol separation.

Thanks Adrian! I’ve got a fuel pump being fitted on Wednesday. Fingers crossed. If that fails I’ll follow your advice! Will keep you posted!

Thank for the till too! I’ll look into this too when the pump is being swapped on Wednesday! Cheers!

Any news? Whereabouts in France are you?
Hi there, sorry I must have missed your post!
I’m located near Saint-Tropez.

So the latest…
Had a new aftermarket fuel pump fitted a couple of weeks ago (rather noisy)…
And went for a 800 miles spin to Italy, partly on asphalt and partly on TET, on the first day the issue I’ve had was still happening a bit then it seem to have vanished!!! Well 90%, still has few little hiccups no and then!

I’m now thinking of changing the fuel injectors. I’ve seen some for sale on the Motorworks website. They’re 1200 GS ones with an adaptor.

cheers!

Hi everyone!

Now, thanks again for all your useful tips and suggestions!

Quick update:

To be continued….

like alot of people here , they hide where they are . consequently , you can't tell them a mechanic works just 5 miles down the road from where they live.
I did say in my original post: " I'm located in the south of france and mechanics who can deal with this issue are very rare!"

One thing to keep in mind is that fuel issues and electronic issues often show very similar symptoms. Seeing as the new fuel pump really didn't change anything I'd be looking at electronic stuff. Often on these older BMW's the electronic ignition module ( at the front behind the crank pulley ) has a tendency to act up. Also check all the wiring harness around the head stock. It appears as you have an intermittent short of some kind.

It was the Hall effect sensor after all! Finally had it changed today! So far so good! 😊

It’s not unusual for the fuel pump to squeal when fuel is low, my GS has done it for the last 15 years.
Before fucking about checking the fuel tank internals try checking the main coil caps
Before you go spending money on people guesses here’s a simple test .
Disconnect the plug caps of both secondary/lower spark plugs on both sides.
Then start the bike and see if it runs on both sides on just the main upper coils. .
If runs on only one side reconnect the lower plug cap on the non running side and see if it improves/runs.
If it doesn’t fire up and run put both lower secondary plug caps back on and see if it then fires up an runs
The main coil caps are notorious for failing/breaking down under load.
This test cost you nothing and only takes 5 minutes
