Welcome. Don't get carried away changing the clutch yet. There will be plenty of advice on here and much discussion to go trough before the spanners come out in anger. What are the symptoms? JJH

Anyone in Merseyside area want to meet up and offer an opinion? About 260 miles for me...

Welcome Billywhizz. I'm absolutely no use whatsoever, but wanted to say welcome and stick around as someone who is useful will be along shortly.

They are difficult to get into first when you're not used to them. On mine, if you are holding the clutch in already and try to go from neutral to first, 9/10 it won't go. I discovered that if you pull clutch in and prod down to first at the same time, it works every time. I discovered this 4 years and 35,000 miles ago so clearly what I had wasn't a symptom of the clutch going.

Although It could be that your issue is deeper, but just thought i'd relay this in case trying it makes any difference.

Neutral to first at a standstill can need a bit of clutch slip, the dry clutch doesn't (shouldn't) drag and if the 'box stops with the dogs lined up wrong it needs a spin to slip in. Rolling change down to 1st shouldn't have the same problem, but the tractor is so tractor-y that I don't have a lot of experience there...

The gear change linkage may need stripping and cleaning, dirt accumulates and the bike appears to be stuck in gear. Or your clutch may be on the way out... try to find a decent independent bmw mechanic near to you for a hands on assessment. These are tractor tonka toys and do take some adjustment to but they are generally pretty robust... if clunky. Good luck and welcome!

What is the oil level like in the clutch master cylinder. If it is low it may point to a leaky slave cylinder which can contaminate the clutch plate causing the slip and smell. I had this happen on my first 1150 but I caught it quick enough for it not to have been a problem. Clutch slave is an easy job to check and see if it is leaking.

Vern at project VND is only in Chester if you need it sorting :thumb2

If it needs a new clutch then it's not a job for the faint hearted:eek:
