Are you sure on this one?.
I thought that the o/d 6th was an option on the later Adventures.
A lack of a tall 6th would be my only reason not to change to an 1150 ADV.

Yes. All 1150 Adventure's have the same 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th. The only option was the low first gear.

I've ridden an 1150 with the overdrive 6th. TBH it's less usable in everyday riding than the "sport" 6th (as the Americans call it). It's fine on long dual-carriageway sections but even then you need to drop out of 6th to pick-up speed quickly.

Like anything, it's what you get used to.

I went from K12LT to 1200GS for reasons of useability when I began to use my bike as my only means of transport. My 12GS was a lemon! Looked great on the back of many towtrucks across Northern England.
I got shut of it and got an 1150ADV. Bestest bike in the whole wide world.

Welcome to the website and the world of the GS!

Some damn good people on here mate, probably the best in the biking world methinks! I've been there too, sold my 03 'Blade for the 1150GS last summer, and I've never looked back. It does exactly what it says on the tin! GS stands for General Service (Army term, I know!)

I've not ridden either of the 12's personally, but I have gathered from keeping eyes and ears open, that many a convert from the 1150 to the 12 are not totally happy with the change, and many regret swapping at all. And lets be honest, when it comes to either the GS or the GSA, for the price of a couple of bolt-ons, you can make a standard one look similar to a GSA, for less than you would pay for an Adv.

The choice is of course, totally yours, but after owning 2 GSXF750's, a 1998 Fireblade, a ZX12R, and an 03 'Blade, i've settled down with the 1150GS, and looking forward to seeing the world from a more sedate speed, as I already started doing!!! Good luck mate!

I am still on the lookout, I have seen a lovely 2005 1150 GSA (SE Version) white on MCN and will be looking to pay a visit in the new year if it's still available. I'm definately gearing more towards the 1150 GSA as i prefer the looks. I'm not worried about performance as i've had plenty of that with the R1. I'm actually thinking of keeping the R1 now as i've recently had some great runs out on it recently. Of course it won't stop me purchasing a GSA providing the funds are available.I can't think of anything better than having the option of a sunday morning blatt on the R1 or a weekend away touring the on a GS. However if the funds are not available the R1 will have to go.... I'll keep everyone posted on future developments....

hmmm lot too choose from..it would be hard to mess up with the selection you got..check out the prices and extra's that are coming with the deal...

i ended up choosing a silver gsa1150 with all the ali boxes on, i had a gs 1200 for a short while but didn't like it that much..i've got a street fighter hybusa with a turbo fitted for summer rides..but for year round all weather stuff on tarmac the gsa 1150 is unbeatable... i use ktm 620cc duke for off road, put the r1 away for the summer it doesn't rain every day hahaha.

You really need to ride them in some pea soup weather to see which suits you best...if you got time to look around get one with abs...i regularly race r6's and bandits round the forest of dean so i won't get hung up calling one faster then the other...1200 guys really love their bikes so i am sure there will be plenty saying something different to this..the gsa 1150 is tried and tested with all the little niggles solved...the gsa1200 is new...

so you pays your money and takes your chances....looking around the gsa1200 and comparing like for like i thought there was a lot of flimsey stuff bolted to the handle bars...i get real good feeling that if i drop the gsa 1150 i can pick it up and ride off with maybe just a scuff of paint missing from the crash bars... i don't feel so sure about the gsa 1200...i guess we all love what we ride...

I absolutley agree, I had a bandit 6 before and loved every minute i was on it. I toured France on it, 2 up with panniers and a tank bag and had a fantastic time, although I did suffer from the numb bum syndrome.

I find the R1 a lot more comfortable than the Bandit ever was which is odd considering the riding position but I wouldn't consider anything more than a long weekend away on the R1. I'm not a fan of riding with a rucksack attached to my back for long hours. I've already done a weekend away in France this year but spent most of the time trying not to get nicked for speeding or crashing..... .

However, I do enjoy the R1, It's a great bike for a summer blatt or trackday but i want something the brings back the enjoyment of riding and taking in everything it involves without worrying about loosing the licence for riding too fast....

If possible, the R1 will stay and a nice 1150 GSA will sit alongside it in the garage

Like I said, I sold the 03 Blade for the GS, and was happy with it.......but earlier this summer, I had a mad urge to go back to Sports bikes, (think it was from watching the MotoGP!) So, I struck up some extra wedge, and went and got a late Reg 98 model Fireblade, like the first one I had. Took it out for a couple of days out, did a track-day at Oschersleben here in north Germany, and since then I rode it to work once. AND THATS IT! It's been sat in my garage since, and hasn't moved. The GS has done another 1000 miles in the autumn months, and I'd still be out on it now if the roads weren't so bloody cold here!!!!
I'm not old, just 31, but my point really, is that even having gone back to the sports bikes, the GS just makes so much more sense. And the added bonus is you more than likely won't get pulled by the fuz just for being on a bike!!!

Welcome from another newbie. Whilst my old FJ12 isn't an R1 it still goes mighty fast and I was doing more and more of just that so I knew it was only a matter of time before something bad happened one way or another. Now had my 1150GSA for a week and the transformation is real. Now I am riding more relaxed, I can see views never seen before and when in traffic the extra road 'presence' over other bikes is an added safety bonus. Warm hands are nice too and perhaps explains why of only six bikes at Devil's Bridge last Sunday afternoon three were BMW's

Well, I took a ride up to Oxford BMW today and spoke to Steve who introduced me to x2 very nice looking 1150 GSA's,both in black with low mileage. One on an 04 plate and one on an 05, I prefer the 04 model as it comes with more extra's including engine bars and adventure top box, abs and heated grips. It was also slightly less than the 05 model. I'm off to the Alps on Sunday for a week of playing in the snow and will decide what to do whilst there. Who knows, could be a new steed on the way very shortly.....

I hope that you found some, it is in rather short supply this year! It is very warm around here and although I usually ride all year round, this January I am still more or less in summer gear!
I had an 1150GS for two years - wonderful bike & I could not fault it. Then I tried the 1200GS and changed to that. It is a lighter, more nimble bike and I like everything about it, servo brakes, expndable panniers etc. (And a battery you can get at !) I fitted the larger windscreen from the Adventure- although I had no problem with the original - it just looks right on the bike.
It is a big change from an R1 - my advice would be to buy a good 1150 and if/when you are convinced, upgrade to a 1200 anf you won't lose much. (As you will ride it in all weathers make sure it has ABS.)
