Recently got back from a European trip on my 1150 GS ADV and over the 4,000mls it's been pinking a hell of a lot. Tried higher octane fuel but still the same. It happens mainly when under load or anywhere over half throttle, and a lot more when it's hot. Any ideas on why and what can be done to cure it? 2003, 91,000mls.

Do you have the correct relay installed?
TB Synch carried out recently?
TPS positions checked?
spark plugs in good condition?
HT leads in good condition?
Fuel flow?
Fuel condition?

I always run the lower grade fuel (cos am tight) and live in far north Australia where it is always hot.
Years ago, I was talking with a guy on an 1100GS who worked for Shell.
He said that Shell petrol is not so good in aircooled engines.
a little bit of testing with different brands confirms that.
Yes, people will say it all comes from the same place, but I notice the difference.

I lived with it, mostly fill up with BP where I can.

Just on the weekend, I finally fitted some Boxer Performance sprockets on the Cam shafts.
HUGE difference, Pinking problem greatly reduced.
more torque, more power, gets up to speed quicker as well.

well made, great instructions, VERY impressed

Yes to all. It seems to have been getting worse over the last year. I did wonder if the 'JohnGS Tuning Chip' would help?

and a thought, the HES wiring, is it breaking down and high resistance.
Usually accompanied but the tacho gauge erratic and also, I beleive, sudden failure.

Remember, start with the simple things first

Check ignition timing,it may have had new hall sensors fitted,IMO don't fit one of johns chips till you have sorted it.
I fitted one prior to a euro trip this year, bike was pinking like mad under load,
May be down to crap fuel but I recon John tweaks the ign mapping for more advance.

Thanks, will get the timing checked. No hall sensors have been fitted as I've had it from nearly new.

Slime Bomb,
I have a good quality 'Snap-on' timing light if you want to use it for checking and I live down the road in Nantwich. It would be good to see how it works regarding its use on the GSA as I have one as well.
