R1300GS / the good the bad & the ugly

In the BMW flat twin engine the pistons, or big ends to be more accurate, are on separate crank pins (or journals), hence the cylinders are staggered more than say a V twin with a shared crank pin
The pistons move in and out at the same time, it is indeed a boxer
 
Daggerit I think you are slightly mistaken as BMWs are true boxers while Harleys use the same crankpin which would be the definition of a flat twin if the cylinders where not V shaped…The 3rd bearing on the boxer would not change the configuration but just give it the ability to keep the flex on crank and case lower if you put more stress on it…That is why the R18 has a triple bearing because the pistons are Huge and heavy…On a smaller boxer you could raise the rpm ceiling beyond 9000 rpm…

Sirich…I get what you say and totally agree that the linked brake system is great on the brake lever…But to also link the foot lever is just plain stupid…Try to do a tight turn on the steering lock holding the bike on the rear brake on the friction point without having to pick it up a second later…Good luck…Very stupid on BMWs side which makes me wonder who actually comes up with this stuff and why!? Probably the same guy who thinks a blinker that doubles as a brake light is a good idea…LOL

Ah, but the BMW bower twins DO have two crankpins at 180 degrees apart. Both pistons are at TDC at the same time. One at the top of the compression stroke, the other on the exhaust styroke.

And for the frame they must be so embarrassed not using lighter and more expensive aluminum cast that they hide it behind plastic covers which you otherwise had to buy for good money from Wunderlich…LOL Oh well such is life and looking at what is going on in the world with all the lies and endless wars high unemployment and unaffordable energy prices we have way bigger problems like why is the new GS not as good as it could/should have been but in 5 years when the world as we know it is still existing BMW wants to sell us the new all improved version and give us a reason to trade up…LOL I mean people who dont have short legs,small bladders and people who like motorcycles with nice boxer sound and are not afraid of more than 145 hp…LOL

Daggerit obviously you obviously have never ridden a R18 or have seen a crank of either R18 or Harley…Anyways cant wait to try the new 13 to see how bad it really is…LOL And hopefully Bennetts does a R1250/1300 comparo soon because these guys where dead right when they did the R1200/1250 comparo and I traded in my 1200 the following week and never looked back !

And still 6000 mile service intervals. How very retro.
 
6000 miles are totally fine to change the oil…Hydraulic valve elements would have been nice especially where the rpms are pretty moderate…
 
Also I wonder how much lighter the good looking forged wheels are compared to the cast wheels and if the stupid linked foot brake can be shut off in pro modes as it is in Enduro mode for obvious reasons !
 
I have ordered them for mine and I think they are around 1.5 kgs lighter than the spokes , ordered them as fancied a change from the spokes but was unsure about the cast design.
 
I like the idea of the weight reduction with those wheels but a GS is not a GS without spokes, spokes look the mutts. I have two sets of wheels, both spokes, one off road and one on road, hate the look of alloys.

I know what you mean but , just thought I would take a chance and could not make my mind up , Its annoying as I have a spare set of spokes as you have , but they wont fit .. I will be ordering a set when they come available as like to have a spare set for tyre choices .

If you want to sell your spokes and they are in good nick I know someone who is looking for a set.
