R1300GS / the good the bad & the ugly

@ roundincircles…You got that right…With 155hp/nm & 24 instead of 19 liter tank and preferably aluminum frame which would make up for the additional gallon in the tank I would open my wallet now and make up the difference between my ‘19 1250 and the 50% premium the ‘24 1300 commends…LOL

On bennetts I found a pretty good explanation how the all new worlds first variable spring rate suspension works…! Like having 2 springs with different stiffness for different loads on the bike while before you had to compromise…Also wonder why BMW went back to the shorter stroke of the R1200 while not raising the rpm limit where they could have stayed with the 76 mm stroke of the 1250 GS giving the new one 1350 cc…

Also no thoughts/comments on the now linked foot brake…! I have not seen it in person but to me it looks too much like a Honda with a boxer motor and not enough Manly/GS…I am glad the old BMW moto boss and head designer had been replaced by new talent in the last few weeks ! As Schramm said the new GS does not Need more power but I Want more power so I dont need to buy a new GS…LOL

Clifton…Interesting article, thanks for posting it ! Btw I love cats too LOL As for the new GS going by the pictures it looks too nice too beautiful or too bland too me too and has lost the GS character as a rugged looking bike Robocop would ride but looks are personal and not a deal braker for me…I am sure the new GS is better than the old one but it could and should have been better to urge me to open my wallet like a urge or reflex I cant resist…LOL The stroke should have stayed at 76 mm or even increased to 80 mm considering BMW did not raise the rpm level since the 2013 R1200GSLC…That would have meant 1350-1400 cc and 115KW/lb-ft - 156hp/nm and finally Enough to satisfy our Wants for plenty of go ! As for the frame aluminum beams would have added volume but definitely would have saved weight…Enough to increase the tank to 24liters/6 gallons because 19 liters is too small and I really like my 1250GS-HP or Rally or Trophy as in regular size GS with ADV suspension and dont want to go back to the size & heft of the ADV…Too bad ! Who knows if others feel the same and some updates follow or if the M modell gets 17 inch forged wheels and gives wood as a true XR alternative or a R1300S with T-L will be a great bike like the R1100S was 25 years ago…Time will tell !

Perhaps BMW know what they're doing? Iterative upgrades rather than blowing it all at once. I suspect they know what they're doing on balance.

Boxerlust should apply for a job with BMW. Then he can tell them how they are doing it all wrong and don’t understand engineering or product development and design.

The 19 litre tank is an odd choice.....as in a reduction in size. For me a 200 mile tank range, when ragging it in the Alps, is just about OK.

IIRC BMW claim the fuel consumption is similar to the 1250 so the range is reduced.....that's a backward step.

The maths indecate 206 mile range at 49 mpg but the 1250, when ragged, is sub 40 mpg. So the range will be inferior to the 1250!

It will be fine as I need to stop for a pee after 100 plus miles , so splash and dash (petrol that is ) , can also have a coffee and a fag lol , the V4s worried me as it was useless on fuel but there are many fuel stops in the Alps and other mountain ranges and never became an issue , well apart from when I forgot going back to St Jean Pied and stopped at the coffee house on the hill with 10 miles of fuel with 20 to go ...... made it tho.

BMW does not listen...I told them already years ago the R1200S would be a flop with the smaller tank, smaller bags,no centerstand and no passenger pad that it would not sell like the R1100S did for 7 years...After 2 years it was dead.Same the R18 nobody buys because Harley riders dont want bikes that are heaven heavier than Harleys that sound like wet farts...
The new GS looks nice but not like a real GS should...Not nice but like a GS , different and like adventure and unconventional not like a Honda or Suzuki or all the boring appliances from Japaninc...I dont say the Multilala looks any better looking a\like a ugly duckling to me or the KTM has no design at all like a plasticy dirt bike at best. But I can get over looks but the 19 liter tank means you have to get a ADV which is too big while 24 liters would have been perfect !
As for the motor why the small step of 9 hp and 6 nm more torque and then 5 years from now we finally get 50 cc more with the 76 mm bore to see 152hp/nm and then in 2034 the 160hp/nm R1400GS...Problem with that I can understand BMW to go little by little to milk the cow but by then I will be getting close to 70...Swiss time is running out and so is my patience...LOL
LInked foot brake is crap so why ?
Less weight is good but I will be surprised if it is really 12 kilos because I have the suspicion that the center stand , luggage rack and passenger pegs which are packaged options now where not part when the R1300GS Boxer weigh in for the fight while the R1250GS did...But I might be wrong but we will know soon !
UsuallyI buy another bike every 3 years after the warranty ran out and I got bored with it...Looks like I might run the extended 7 year warranty on my R1250GS for a while longer...

Sounds like a plan , does that mean you will stop posting here as your not happy and have informed us all of the current situation with bmw . Thanks again 42 and thanks for all the fish 👍👍

@roundincircles...20 liters is the bare minimum so 19 is a cruel joke no matter how efficient the new higher compression motor might be...Fact is if the new engine makes 9 hp more it will consume more gas if you use the additional power...My fuel light on the 1250 sometimes comes on on the 100 mile mark and 150 miles is pushing it when I run hard...Like I said the ADV will have a big enough tank but I really dont want to go back to the big beast but 24 which was the standard BMW tank size would have been perfect...19 liters and lithium battery are just cynical marketing tricks to get the weight down as an aluminum frame instead of the Hoda Monkey presses steel frame probably would have netted 5 kilos. for real and I would have gladly paid for it..LOL But I am not an engineer and stand correcyed if it wasnt so and aluminum would have been to finicky but even Moto-X bikes use aluminum frames dont they ?

It is a head scratcher because where they show the bike in virtually every video I've seen is in the middle of nowhere, with nary a building (much less a petrol station) even in sight. The tank is aluminium so very light. They really should have made the capacity a little more, say 24 liters to please Boxerlust :), then listed wet weight the same but with an * denoting "filled with 19 liters of petrol". The tank being only 7mm wider on each side wouldn't be noticed by 99% of us. That would give us close to 200 miles plus another 40 to find a petrol station. Slim 135# racer riders that ride w/o even a rack, much less luggage, that can feel every pound could fill the tank with however little they want.

Hopefully Bennetts comes out with a real comparison soon like they did R1200/1250GS when the R1250GS came out...Weight,dyno,mpg,etc !

Clifton the R1200/1250GS-ADV has an aluminum tank...Wonder they did not go to 16 liters to advertise another 4 kilos less...the 19 liter tank and Lithium battery already makes up for 3 kilos which feels like cheating to me...!

They're gradually reducing capacity and range so when EV motorcycles come that can achieve 105 miles until needing to be recharged, we'll be adjusted to it. :)

Clifton good thing with all the mess we are in EV's are dead for so many reasons no matter what the idiots who still run the show are saying ! And on motorcycles EV is a total no go for weight and range reasons on top of all the other reasons why the so called electric future has no future....We have oil for 1000 years so lets burnt it...LOL
Imagine a 100 kilo heavier GS with 100 mile range going to Ushuaia...You are faster riding a donkey...LOL

I wonder where the press bikes are and why the first real numbers on dyno and weight have not come out yet ? Come on Bennetts give us that R1250/1300GS review we are all waiting for...LOL
Or some guys here at least after a demo ride giving some first impressions after a 15 minute ride around the block...
