R1300GS / the good the bad & the ugly

There are pictures on the net probably in Enduropark Hechlingen where also the new 1300 GS seen first of a teal enduro based on the R12NineT with tall suspension , big tank and a new exhaust system to be taken off road unlike the hipster poser Urban…I would say if not for 24 it will be released for 25 as the second or third variant of the R12Ninety that also gets a cruiser variant called R12S…

I was unaware of this, I tried the r9t urban and l like the old twin cam motor but didn’t care for the rest of the bike. If the did something in a similar mould to how Ducati have done the desert x I would be very interested, but would need to be significantly lighter than anything they make now and I think that is where they would struggle. They have the 900gs but that’s not a boxer or a shaft drive and it’s giving away 15hp against its rivals so I don’t think that bike will sell at all.

If only BMW had listened to boxerlust they could have made a bike that suited one amurikan. you talk some useless rubbish yank. 🥱
They produce a bike that is a compromise for many people/markets and probably have a better idea than you what sells well.
Perhaps you should set up a multi billion euro company to market make a proper bike to outsell the GS. you know, show them how it should be done. You’ll have them quaking in their boots in no time. 😁

Or he could just keep saying, ‘next year’ ‘the next model’ ‘when they make’ blah blah fucking blah.

I’m never sure if he had a bike, even rides a bike, but worst of all…I think that he’s being serious and believes all the shite that he comes out with.
Unbelievable!!!

He works for Triumph

So you guys tell me 1000 rpm more on top and a little top end rush and 10 hp more and a gallon more in the tank would make the new GS less attractive because it would have been too powerful and 4 kilos heavier on paper…LOL Or the Reggies of the world rather try to put their own 17 inch wheels and 320 mm rotors on and would never buy a XR type bike because it would not work with a powerful boxer , shaftdrive & Telelever…You guys make me laugh because you are obviously clueless and I think some product planners at BMW too….I dont say the new GS is bad and I like some features like the TFT sport screen , probably more stable frame that does not wobble above 125 like the 1250 and is still nimble , forged wheels and if you are short the low rider button and probably the all new ESA suspension with adjustable spring-rates which is hard to believe but a smaller tank is a no go , so is the linked rear brake and if not for psychological reasons alone hp should have been above 150 to generate some excitement and give you the urge to open the wallet trading in the 1250…For me giving them probably 18 grand on top of my trade in they did not move the goal post far enough like they did in generations before ! Like I said with 155 hp and a 24 L tank I would have been excited and willing to pay and even being an early adopter but what I see the temptation is fairly low…LOL

Have you looked at the Triumph Explorer? You get an extra cylinder, the option of a huge tank, lots of revs, all sorts of springs and things.....plus a badge with Heritage!

1000 more rpm, 10 more hp, and another gallon could make any motorcycle more attractive. But it isn't happening on the GS because it's already out and it is what it is. Personally I think BMW did a nice job in designing it to appeal to their target buyers, and the GSA version will just broaden the line more. You wishing for 17" wheels and I wishing for 21"/18" ones are outliers, for 95% of buyers their decision to fit 19/17 was the best choice by far.

You can buy a 17" wheel and make it into a supermoto, plus carry along an extra gallon container if you choose, but it's not feasible to rework the motor to rev higher and make 10 more hp. If 125 hp (or whatever it puts to the ground) isn't enough move on it's as simple as that. Continuously complaining on a GS site that the new GS isn't what you wished for becomes tedious after a while.

Bikes are targeted at market segments. BMW covers most segments. Change the key characteristics and you target another segment.....so the boxer already has, Sports Tourer, Adventure Tourer, Off/On Road Adventure, Road Tourer, and Cruiser......guess the IL4 XR 1000 is the ballistic all day comfy Tourer

Clifton I love BMW boxers and could buy a S or M1000XR and would have the bike that is practical and fast enough to suit my needs or wants…But I prefer the boxer that protects bike and legs , love the Telelever and prefer a shaft over a chain for obvious reasons ! The new GS did not move the goalpost far enough so I keep the 1250 where I would have loved to buy a new GS after 4 years on the old one…Despite Arsey who is just here because he hates BMWs I actually own and ride one ! And Reggie is the fellow who buys a new GS every other year here on the board and puts 17 inch cast wheels and 320 mm rotors on it like Thousands of other Reggies around the world despite the shortcomings and no additional power to actually take advantage of the sportsbike rubber on a trackday…Hooefully the M1300GS will be this bike done right by the factory !

I’ll say it but probably regret it but I don’t think they will make M1300gs.

I'm with you as far as the overall advantages of the combination of boxer engine, Telelever, and shaft drive in this kind of motorcycle. The 1300 is basically an entirely new motorcycle compared to the 2013 R1200 through 2023 R1250 series but the 1250GS has evolved to a really nice machine and has those same attributes. If I had an R1250GS I doubt I'd be looking to upgrade to a first year R1300GS, but I don't have a 1250 so maybe I'll consider a 1300..... if it can be equipped the way I'd want which is more minimalist. The R1200 GS Camhead you referenced might suite me even better as it has plenty of power for my needs, but then there's Guzzi's new V100 Stelvio coming to consider as well. And the 24 Africa Twin now with tubeless 18/21" wheels. Nice having all these choices.

I’ve owned many GSs over the years .I had one in my garage until last year. Now please stop making yourself look like a complete cockwomble.
The new GS is out.It is what it is.Just buy the fucking thing or don’t buy it but most of us on here are fed up of your childish rant about always wanting another 10bhp and 17” wheels. Its pathetic.

Clifton the new GS based on the R12NineT looks like the simpler alternative to the R1300GS for people who like the old camhead ,fork and probably 20 kilos less…The new Stelvio I dont see as a real GS competitor because it is probably heavier despite having less power and no Telelever front suspension…And the Honda is really nothing as way bigger and heavier than the 890 KTM for people who actually ride off road and on the street no comparison to handling & engine of the GS . Arsey just STFU as you dont even own a BMW…LOL Pathetic is that BMW did not give the bike 155hp/nm and we have to wait for it until the mid-cycle refresh 5 years from now and made the tank 1 liter smaller instead of a gallon bigger ! Hopefully other people see it the same way and sales will be not as hot so they will upgrade things sooner…

Couple of (very poor) youtube videos out for first rides on the 1300gs. Lots of waffling and little in the way of ‘real’ info apart from:
better gearchange, excellent quickshifter (there is a reason BMW have referred to it as Gearshift assist in the past lol…) and the motorcycle now feels really light.
Now just waiting for a real review where someone actually rides a mountain pass or a road with some corners at a decent lick and compares handling, agility etc with the 1250.
Guess I am part of the minority as a 17” front wheel version has always been a want, to give a much wider choice of tyres.
I did ride a well sorted 1150gsa conversion years ago, and the handling was superb. More tyre choice and better looking imo.
Main thing for me is retention of the paralever front end.
More power? Not bothered, but weight reduction, definitely good. Would like to see the front end lift in second and third without needing a big crest in the road!
Fingers crossed for a proper HP or M version.
Only problem will then be the price. Who said the Germans have a poor sense of humour?

btw, 1 litre of petrol is not 1 kilo! It is (approx) 740grammes. Neither of which I would really notice in the real world.
