R65LS

Not much progress on the R65 today as my Volvo XC70 was due it's annual service so that kept me busy most of the day

I did manage a little painting first thing this morning and then a bit rubbing down late this afternoon , came up OK

The painter can't fit me in until August so I think I'm just going to refresh the worst bits myself and leave the rest as is for now

I'll still do my usual 100% mechanical refresh and may keep the bike as my winter bike or sell it on to someone who can then do the cosmetics or use as is

Had a fight removing the clutch but it's out now , the friction plate is right at it's lower service limit at 4.5mm so I've ordered a new one

Crank end boss did not want to come off , tried my usual methods and it wasn’t moving - time to phone a friend ;-)

Thanks again to Mikeyboy - his advice as usual was spot on and the crank end boss is off and the rear main seal removed

Cycleworks used to make a tool to remove the crank boss. No longer available 🙁

I think I was lucky with Moneypit and it came out relatively easily

Having struggled with this crank boss I’ve got a design in mind for a home made one so next time it shouldn’t be such a job

Have I missed something in the last five pages , a lovely pair of round head valve covers have appeared! Very nice. These rebuilds and refresh’s are. Delight to view

Oh dear , more unplanned expense on the R65 - both fork stanchions damaged/worn :-(

Off out for the rest of the day on the R80GS , I think I need some fresh air !

Are these the same as the R80st? I thought they were.
If so, I have a pair of R80st forks, complete, if them are of use to you.
Will be coming up north mid way through June if you want me to bring them up…..

Thanks for the offer . I think the forks are specific to the R45 and R65 but will let those more in the know than I am advise

That’s a bugger. Obviously you can have them replated and ground but the turnaround is usually pretty slow in my experience. Won’t be fast enough to match your work rate!

I think I may have sourced a good set of used forks , I’ll know by middle of the week , fingers crossed

Replacement forks received and are in excellent condition :)

Just need to drain the old oil , give them a good clean / flush out , then replace the seals and fill with new oil

My pal came round this afternoon and we got the engine back in the frame without damaging any of the newly refurbished paintwork . Also got the new forks stripped and rebuilt and fitted along with new steering head bearings . Gearbox , carbs, brake calipers and final drive are all ready to go back on the bike
