I have accidentally , well my wife has deleted some photo's from the recycle bin?
I have heard that on XP you can retreive anything that has been deleted from it.
This was done about 6 months ago, is t still possible to retrieve it? If so how do i do it?

Or is it lost forever!

Cheers

You can retreive lost files on your pc with a program like undelete, but if its been 6 months you are very unlikely to get your files back.

The reason is that when you delete something from your PC, all that actually happens is the reference to that file on your hard disk is deleted, not the file itself. Programs like undelete examine your actual disk and cross reference against the reference table finding files which have been deleted previously. Unfortunately once a file has had its reference removed and therefore deleted, the part of the disk which your file is still written to can be overwritten by another file, which is why its unlikely its still there after 6 months of use.

banger,

AS Mikeh501 sai, unless the pc has over written on the actual space that the wanted photos were on, then the chance s are that the phots are stilllthere.

The factility that you are refering to on XP is the restore function. I used it several times and it is very usefull (especially when you load software that turns out to be loaded with spam ect).

Youll find it here:

start - programmes -accessproies -system tools - system restore

its self explanatory when you get open, choose a date before the files were deleted and restore to then. Note however, that there is a chance that youll now loose whatever was done after that, but it isnt meant to loose any downloads. Although i used it a couple of times I have only gone back a couple of days.

Good luck

Set a restore date for today and do a backup before you try the restore, then you can save the photos if you manage to find them (why do you keep photos in the recycle bin anyway   ) and then restore to today's restore point, If you see what I mean. ;)

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. Having used restore a couple of times I believe that only system files are returned to the date of your choosing and any installed programs after that date are cleanly removed. Date files are left untouched and as such any deleted files will still be deleted.

Adam :)

Yep! i just retreived it.

Cheers guys.

p.s It was in the bin as my wife put it in there by mistake with other unwanted piccies!

Adam,

Youre probably right, i havent tested the restore facility to its limit neither am I an expert onit. I know its there and I ve used it a couple of times :)

What I have noticed it that if you have loaded software, downloaded data to one of its created internal directories, then restore to a previous date. The software goes, any spam ect goes, but so does the data files (presumably because the directory has been 'deleted').

If you then go and reload the software, the files reappear, as if by magic;)

Thus dont believe that any thing is deleted just because Bill Gates says so :D

At the moment I am not sure wether restore just works on system files (which is what I thought it did) or wether it deletes other files that happen to get in the way as well!

Have fun

Steve
