Hi,

Had a Remus exhaust fitted to my new 1200gs only to find that the number plate is melting :o . Does anyone know of tailpipe extensions that would divert the exhaust gases beyond or away from the number plate?

Thanks :thumb

Without sounding silly, would a different size plate not do the job too? If legalities concern you particulary, I'm sure there must be road legal lon-but-narrow plates that you could buy and still meet regs...

Be careful though.....there are regs regarding character width and spacing, plus on bikes registered after September 2001,number plates must only be two line.

They are legal as a 3 line prior to this registration date.

Single line have never been legal on a bike .
( Hence I`ve had to buy a few new plates recently :o )

There`s all the dimensional regs you`ll ever need on the DVLA website. :thumb

Remus do a 5 inch chromed thingy, like a big jubilee clip with a semi circular shield on it...it tightens up on the end of the 'zorst and is supposed to deflectthe gases a bit...you may be able to use that to modify the gas flow a bit (tighten it up well thoug...I did mine up to the point that I thought I was gonnacave in the end bit of pipe but it fell off on the motorway less than a mile away :spitfire )

Touratech also do a pipe extension for one of their ranges of panniers......it takes the gases up to above the indimacators and aparently works well if it looks crap.

I'd also keep a sharp eye on the skips behind the local 'zorst dealers....you may well find a bit of bent pipe that would be useable for nowt ;)

any chance you could fiddle with the remus mount to re angle the can out a bit to miss your number plate?

you can usually get a bit of adjustment on the old 1150 units. of course you need to be careful you don't then fry your panniers :D

mine did the same

without the baffle in, not much adjustment available so put baffle back.
Still loud enough for me and no melted plastics. :thumb

My 04 1200 melted the rear plate with a remus can fitted, I changed the plate, nothing else, just the plate, never had a problem since :nenau

I've probably got a bit of heat sheild kicking about if you want a bit, give me a bell and let me know what size you want and I'll bung it in the post :thumb

I just fitted a Remus to my 1200 last week, and felt the number plate and left rear indicator was to hot, so in typical a bodge fashion, i tried to work out how to prevent a melt down.

All i done was add a thick washer to the inside of the bracket, that mounts to the footrest hanger. This seems to of moved the can further from the bike, looking at it from the rear. All seems to be a little cooler now. This should be ok as long as you don't use panniers.

I found if you loosen the clamp at the bottom of the connector first, it will leave everything lose enough to put in the washer, and do up the top bolt on the hanger. ( the bolt isn't really all that long so dont try anything to thick )

I cant guarantee this is a perfect solution, but its cheap and easily undone if your not happy.
I have also noticed the latest Remus cans have a longer "spout" an the end of the can, to prevent the panniers, and i assume from other posts, the left indicator / number plate, from melting.

Does anyone know if this is just a 'side effect' of the Remus end can or do all after market cans suffer this problem? :nenau

I had the same problem until I removed the removable insert thingy. seems to run cooler now.

I have a Full Remus Revolution system fitted and have had no problem with my number plate melting.

:thumb Thanks guys for all the help. Did a bit more hunting around with Remus and dealer. Remus say can is not fitted correctly. Metal washer/spacer should be on inside of bracket sleeve, dealer now discussing with Remus. Other solution is heatshield (thanks for offer) which dealer already says will supply. :)

do you have any more info.or pics on/of these spacers. I have had a issue where the indicator is melting, but had the remus on 2 years and only just started to effect indicator. ( no baffle fitted)

any more ideas ????????

if

you have panniers fitted you could make something like this. If you don't have panniers you could still do something along those lines but it probably needs to be a bit more aesthetically pleasing!
