R1200GS TE New in May 2014 - 9300 miles

The often described paint issues / corrosion has developed since April when it was last serviced. I did not extend the warranty.

It was inspected by dealer on Tuesday and today they have comeback to me already saying BMW have offered a replacement engine provided I pay for installation £450 inc VAT and I must pay for 600 mile "running in" service (again!)

I'd looked & looked at the bike & really thought I'd escaped this problem even though mine was made in midst of the piss poor paint era.

Whilst acknowledging I may be looking gift horse in the mouth & appreciate the dealers efforts, is what I've been offered representative of the experience of others?

Should I be biting their hand off?

Or because it happened with such swiftness & ease on my part am I smelling an imaginary rat?

Any contribution you make toward a repair out of the manufacturers warranty period means that the 2 year warranty on that item remains with you, so if it corrodes again within the next 2 years, then it's back to BMW

If you had highlighted the corrosion and BMW had replaced the engine within the manufacturers warranty period the replacement engine would have been completely FOC including the 600 mile service

Only you can make the 'is it worth it' decision

Me? I'm having the motor replaced FOC on my 2014 GSA TE on the 12th September on which the warranty expires 2 weeks later

Anyone had one done under the extended warranty? Mine's got some starting to show

I'm in the same boat, mine is coming up to 3yrs old and the engine is starting to look quite poor. I'm going to head down to the garage I purchased it from next week for them to take a look but I don't believe it's covered usually.

Corrosion is excluded in the T's & C's of the Extended Warranty Policy

Since my dealer advised me that BMW would be replacing the motor under warranty I have noticed another spot of corrosion in a different location on the engine

My engine and drive train are being replaced at the end of the month - April 2105 bike. It's pretty shocking, really. I'm considering seeing how it looks after the winter with the new lump and deciding if I jump off the Good Ship BMW or not.

Fixed it for you. [ date ]

I'm sure you're not alone .... Personally speaking, I'd call it new bike time and probably buy another GSA :blast

Mine is an April 2015 bike too with over 16,500 miles on it and not one spot of paint bubbling (yet, touch wood) I have ridden through two winters too - I wonder what the root cause of these paint issues really is? I am pretty fussy about cleaning and liberally and carefully apply FS365 to all painted surfaces.

Same for me with the FS365 only mine has half your miles, hasn't been ridden through the winter yet has two corrosion spots on the motor, yet my 58000 mile old 06 GSA (which gets treated in exactly the same way) has no corrosion whatsoever

I had a small patch of paint bubbling on the alternator cover of the 2008 Tiger 1050 before my GS. That was it. I never felt it necessary to buy and use ACF-50 or FS365 on that or bikes before it. Why do these BMWs need to be treated so specially? I've hosed/pressure-washed this GS down religiously after every ride (week-end rider, me) during the October to March period, as I have previous bikes. The GS is my first ever new bike.

Ask them if BMW would allow you to pay what the dealers charge BMW for removal & refit of the new engine ;-)

I was told by my dealer that GSA's weren't affected as it was only the silver engine on the GS that rusted. Haven't really looked at my 2014 GSA TE, should I?

GSA's not affected? That's bollocks that is ........... I would be having a very close look if I were you :augie

Yup, I know of one that is being examined by a dealer this weekend. Sept 14 GSA

The paint is crap. Its always been crap and they have no plans to make it less crap. It costs far more to paint things properly than replace 10% of people's engines who care about it.

If they didn't corrode and fall apart in few years you wouldn't buy a new one after your typical finance arrangement ends.

Planned obsolescence. Its tbe business model most big companies are following now.

If you're being offered a new engine for the sake of £450 and your motor is already a few years old then i think its worth it.

A lot of these water cooled motors are already failing after a couple of years. Clutch/gearbox issues are very common as are water pumps.
