Does a new engine come with a new clutch and gearbox?
Also do they come with the new heavier flywheel?

Usually yes. You can get a 'short' engine with some models but in this case i think not.

We've out quite a few of these and BMW always supply a full motor with everything ready to go. They even have oil in...

Hello guys and girls! I could do with some advice?

BMW have come back today and my 2015 GSA (5k miles) is going for major surgery! New engine, drive train and bevel!(Corrosion)

For those out there that have also had this what exactly is the process? ie when they change the engine I take it that they issue some paperwork to prove the mileage ect?

How does it work with your servicing schedule as clearly when the bike is due a 6k service the engine will be needing 600mike service! So what about 3 years time when it needs its 24k how will that work out as the engine will have covered 18k!

Sorry if it's a daft question just no idea how they play it!

Many Thanks

I'm getting a replacement engine mid September and the bike will have only done around 10k by then but it will be 2 years old come the end of September so I intend to allow BMW to carry out a 600 mile service (which will be FOC) then pay for what ever is involved in the remainder of the 12k service bringing the bike back in to line with the BMW recommended service schedule

It's my understanding that the 12k/2 year service is the first time the valves are checked/adjusted so that'll be one saving on the cost of the scheduled service based on age/time

This is what I will be doing. I'm not suggesting that this will be the same for everyone else who has a replacement engine

have replies to this in my NEW ENGINE thread.

Anyone had one done under the extended warranty? Mine's got some starting to show

I am getting a replacement engine in a 2014 1200GS TE. Manufacturers warranty ran out in March 2016, I bought the bike in October 2015 with a 12 months BMW approved warranty. I was told it would be a 'good will' gesture as it was out of the manufacturers warranty period. Also having the final drive casing replaced as that is suffering the same problem.

Well my 2014 GSA WC has had a number of ESA problems, a couple glitches with it cutting out, switchgear replacements, drive shaft gaiter failure, baggy seats , soft paint on the rear subframe and issues with the gear assist pro but he engine paint is still after 12,000 miles absolutely perfect .

PRAISE THE LORD IT'S A MIRACLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read that all the corrosion issues were because they paint the casings then machine the mating surfaces and this leaves bare metal for the damp to get under the paint I dont know if this is true or not but if so would sealing all the joints when new with some sort of clear sealant help reduce the risk

Probably right, on the black engines it is obvious that the cases have been painted and then the areas where fixing fasten down onto have been milled back to bare alloy

With a lot of engines they are painted after assembly and all the joints are sealed and painted at the same time guess BMW have a different system on these bikes and its not quite working out as expected and eventually they all will go the same way unless they change the process in the factory

Here is one of the old R1150GS engines been painted :D

So if BMW are replacing the engine and final drive unit as a 'goodwill gesture' have they asked you to make a contribution towards the repair?

Ok, so only 9 days after taking it to dealer to look at problem it is coming back tomorrow with a new engine fitted.

It is coming in a van.

I have to be honest I'm not keen on riding it, in fact I just want to sell it, thoroughly disillusioned with the whole BMW experience, it was my first brand new bike & I'd planned to keep it for many years.

What's the problem ? Just ride and enjoy your "new" bike.

If you are not happy with it now, you never will be. Either see if they will replace like for like or get rid of it and get something entirely different. Your call, the problems with the new BMW's are well chronicled in these threads though not everybody has problems with their bikes.

Blimey .... there really is no pleasing some people :blast

Maybe you should have saved yourself £450 and just sold it on with the corrosion?

Mine is an April 2015 bike too with over 16,500 miles on it and not one spot of paint bubbling (yet, touch wood) I have ridden through two winters too - I wonder what the root cause of these paint issues really is? I am pretty fussy about cleaning and liberally and carefully apply FS365 to all painted surfaces.

How can you have ridden through two winters.

April 2015 to Aug 2016 is one winter !! unless I am missing something

Mate I feel your pain, I am getting new engine, drive and bevel next week! I had my 09 GSA and loved every mile of the 40k I put on the clock, since I bought my 65 plate I have been nothing but disappointed in the bike! Might just leave it with the dealer and chop her in for something that will last!

Just can't be bothered worrying about it becoming a rust bucket again!

Maybe it's time BWM took note and sorted there lives out as I think a trip to triumph is a foot! I know the Triump Explorer XC will never meet up to the GSA but it will never live down to the disappointment I am feeling!

I know the GSA BMW fans of which I am will smash me for this post I'm just feeling gutted at having spent £17400 on a bike and it looking like a cheap import!

Gutted as I love her
