All I ever read from the no voters is hate and bile but never any evidence why Scotland would be better in the UK. What does that say firstly about those who intend to vote no and the no campaign in general? All hate no facts.

Facts is the one thing missing from the Indies campaign!!

Currency, infrastructure, banking, everything from NATO to Euro! Nothing! White paper full of nothing! An opportunity to sell independence lost....why??? because its a lost cause!

Hey I've certainly not got any hatred or bile well I've called we eckie wee eckie but heck no way I've spoken to my brother and cousins, friends from Edinburgh to Scalloway nobody has mentioned hatred and bile . Sadness yes to think about the problems that will arise if we separated and also the ridiculous situation of us the families of the UK supposedly going our own separate ways. No no I'm sorry that's it.

mmm i think you’ve got it the wrong way around,is that because you know that wee eck & his minions have provided no solid plan for an independent scotland.surely he should be giving this to show us why we should be so?or have i missed something.

SNP MSP Dave Thompson has welcomed news reports today that Shetland Council has called for the consideration of the devolution of control over oil and gas within Scottish waters to the Scottish Parliament. The call was made in their submission to the Calman Commission.


Commenting on the call Highlands and Islands MSP Dave Thompson said:


“This is a very welcome and positive contribution to the debate. Not only does it show the need for Scotland to benefit from the huge resource of oil and gas off our coasts, but it also shoots another of the London parties’ foxes.


“No longer can UK governments try to divide and rule Scotland in order to hang onto all the oil wealth in London. It shows their attempts to manipulate the position of Shetland and Orkney – as recent secret documents showed – have been rumbled.


“Shetland is an excellent model of how Scotland can benefit from Scotland’s oil and gas wealth.



"As official figures showed, an independent Scotland with our oil and gas reserves would move from being Europe's 10th wealthiest nation to Europe's third wealthiest nation.”


The section in Shetland Council’s submission to the Calman Commission reads:


"A key contributor to the Shetland economy over many years has been oil and gas. The regulation of oil and gas is reserved almost entirely to Westminster and consideration should be given to the issue of devolution of control over oil and gas perhaps by means of giving the Scottish Parliament control over oil and gas within Scottish waters."

What about if the Shetlands and Orkney's vote to remain British ? Can they be independent of Scotland and remain British ?

The sad truth is that most of the arguments for independence are anti-English rather than pro-Scottish. Not much of a basis for change there is there?

2009 :blast

Both sets of Islands account for a third of the north sea oil reserves.

Whilst they recognise this is a short term view as the oil will not last for ever, it does provide them with significant options in the debate and potential negotiations. As is said in a previous post they could elect to stay with the Union.

Very true. And a side effect of the "debate", added to the growing anti-english sentiment expressed by so many scots over the last decade or more, is that there is a growing section of the english population that would gladly say cheerio to the scots, with a "feck off, we have had enough of you and would happily see the back of you all". Indeed, it would be interesting to see what the vote would be if all UK countries were voting.

And I have often wondered what the Welsh are thinking about their position within the UK.

For myself, I am not sure what I would vote, if I had the opportunity. But, at least if the scots did go off and do their own thing, it would stop the incessent negative comment (?????) from so many north of the border.

And, if they do go independent, I do not see much chance that they would be welcomed back by the rUK public. We bailed them out once in 1700 after the debacle in Panama.
 
paul08 i would say thats a very small majority and from your side of the fence.now put the shoe on the other foot & say scotland was the dominant country & how many englishman would feel the same? i agree that westminster will always put itself first thats human nature and the fact that the ratio is about 10-1 so any smaller populated country will have very little say.but southern england treats your northern counties like shit aswell so its not all anti this and that.there’s no easy solution but until scotland has leaders that have vision aswell as balls we’re better off together.as for bailing us out in 1700 what westminster have robbed from the north sea with regards to oil alone that pales well into insignificance so please don’t talk shit for the sake of it or are you anti scots??& as for debacles well feck me the list is endless from doon the road.oh and i’ll be voting NO.
