Router problems

Bit puzzled by this one, I have a Dlink G604T router, it's been working fine for the last couple of years. However last week, it has decided to chuck a hissy fit! Neither my pc or laptop can connect wirelessly now (both running Windows XP, equiped with Dlink pci and pcimia wireless cards respectively). Plug a cable into one of the four ports and you're connected to the internet

Anyone else had this problem? I've checked the router aerial connection, the aerial itself for signs of damage etc but nothing seems out of place. Rebooted it, even did a factory reset and set up a new connection. Removed and reinstalled the wireless cards in the PC and laptop. Still no joy. Used my mate's laptop and a different wireless card, still the same.....no connection. I have run AVG, Spybot, A-squared and Ad-aware to see if there were any nasties on the pc and laptop, all scans were clear.

Xp Firewall is off and Zonealarm is not interfering with the wireless connection and the router is set up for MAC address filtering and WPA (all settings correct) and the firmware is up to date.

I can't think of anything else

So....Is it time to get a new router? if so, any recommendations? is 108mbps setup worth having? mine is a 54mbps setup, I don't do any gaming online, nor am I a downloadaholic

Any sensible advice much appreciated

D-Link power bricks are notoriously troublesome.

Despite all the lights lighting up on the device the power brick doesn't give enough output to actually power the device.

If possible try another power brick before replacing the whole device.

Sounds like the wifi has bitten the dust, but as the previous poster said, can you try another one ?

When my 604T won't connect wirelessly,I just pull out the power lead for a few minutes then reconnect and it works fine.I don't pretend to understand it but it does the trick!

Thinking of trying a different brand of router, any recommendations/owner reviews ?

Linksys, owned by Cisco Systems. They know a bit about networks.

Funny how perceptions differ isn't it

I've used Belkin routers for several years......all my dongles, cards, my last wired router and my current Wifi router have all been Belkin....never had a problem..easy to set up, talk to each other nicely and they're not dear

What do you know that's enough to recommend against them Centaur???

Genuinely interested, 'cos as I say, it's the opposite from what I've found

Couple of acquaintances had both bought Belkin F5D series and both had awful problems getting them setup. Neither are IT novices but eventually they returned them and got Netgear 834's which worked first time out of the box. Another website I visit regularly also has a few disgruntled posters with similar problems with this router. I emphasised the F5D series, because that's the only one I have seen or heard mentioned, so perhaps there was a faulty batch since they have all been within the last 8 months or so.

I am also biased against USB wifi adapters for PC's since in my (limited) experience, I find PCI wifi cards more reliable.

Try Googling 'Belkin router problems' for some more info, though I suspect similar enquiries of some other routers would raise similar complaints.

Mine wasn't meant to be a definitive reply, since it's only from a low sample base, but it IS first hand.

Yep Guess who has a belkin 5FD
Guess whose wireless network does not now work. (Although the wired part obviously still does)
Any suggestions for a suitable substitute wireless router?
Also would it also be a good idea to bin the belkin card in one of the PCs at the same time?
Any help appreciated

I've never heard of the brand. £30 delivered seems a lot for an Ebay item.

Spend an extra £12 and get a Linksys. I've been usind an 802.11b Linksys wireless router since 2003. It just works, day in, day out, 24/7. Running 3 PCs via a wireless connection and serving another hub with 2 PCs hard wired to it.

That's a good price, although Novatech's minimum P&P of nearly 6 quid bumps it up a bit.

They are a good company: I got an old tech 802.11b USB adapter from them a few months ago, to add an old laptop to the network, for a under a tenner delivered.

Have you read through the other router help pages in this forum? So many people have wifi now that the airwaves are getting congested. Many problems are fixed simply by moving the transmitter or switching to one of the other 10 channels.

I use THIS fine little free proggy to check whether there are any nearby wifi networks, along with their channel number/s.
