OK, I kind of hope it's just me having a bit of bad luck and everyone else is absolutely delighted with their £305 quid seats...

After much searching of this and other GS forums, I decided I needed a Sargent seat for my 1150GS. I realised it may not suit me, but I was prepared to drop a few quid and sell it on here second hand if I didn't get on with it.

I ordered from Calamander, the importers on 9th April. On 26th April, I got an email from Calamander advising that my seat had been shipped. It didn't arrive, but I received another email on 30th April informing me that the seat had been shipped to the wrong address.

On 1st May (almost a month after my order), I finally received the seat and fitted it to the bike. I found that 2 of the 4 rivnuts that take the subframe bolts were loose and rotated when I tried to tighten them. A couple of drops of superglue sorted that and I fitted the subframe and mounted the seat.

The fit of the seat to the bike was lousy. At the front, one side fitted snugly to the tank, but the other side had a half inch (1cm) gap. At the back, the seat moved about half an inch each way in the clamp. I also found that I could put my hand between the front of the seat base and the tank and lift the seat by a good couple of inches, because the base was so thin & flexible.

I decided to persevere, as if it was as comfortable as folks on here claim, I may be able to forgive (or more likely fix) the poor fit. So I rode the bike with it on for a couple of days (probably about 50-60 miles. It doesn't fit my arse and I found it less comfortable than the original seat, so it had to go back, as owing to the quality problems I was not prepared to offload it to anyone else.

So I contacted Calamander, with photos showing the problems. The first response was "very surprised, we've sold thousands (!) and no-one's ever complained, it's a proven product blah blah, but we'll contact Sargent and see what they say". I never heard back after this, so I asked for a returns number and sent the seat back on 16th May (delay due to me being away with work).

I insured and tracked the package, as it was made very clear in the returns advice that the seat was my liability until Calamander had signed for the package. They received and signed for it on 17th May. Several emails and 2 phone calls later, I received an email informing me that a refund for the purchase price had been issued yesterday, 28th May (not in my bank yet though!). I emailed and phoned Calamander regarding refund of the return shipping and got a very poor attitude from Sean Williams.

Essentially, he told me that I must have overtightened the frame bolts (I couldn't even tighten them, let alone overtighten!) and that the poor fit must be due to my bike being the wrong shape, with the tank wrongly installed somehow, and no-one else had ever complained and thousands had been sold and I was a very awkward customer and he'd refunded in full despite the seat now being ruined and unsaleable because of 2 drops of glue on the rivnuts and I should be grateful that he had been as lenient as he had and I was completely unreasonable to expect postage refund as it was clear in the T&Cs that it was my liability (and breathe...)

So, crap seat, crap quality, crap service, crap attitude. Tony Archer here I come. (/end rant)

Just me, or has anyone else had similar?

Think its the supplier rather than Sarget seats themselves. Had a problem with the pillion seat tool cover on my 1200. emailed and a week later got a new cover foc.. Sargent seat, had 2, always seem a good product. May be try another supplier, Nippy Normans may be :nenau

Consider yourself lucky that Calamander communicated with you. They just ignored me

Not just me then! BTW, I'm very difficult to ignore and whenever I phoned and the secretary answered, Sean had "left the building". This morning though, he made the mistake of picking the phone up himself :D

OK, I was beginning to think I was being unreasonable expecting a 300 quid seat to be good :ronno

Thanks for the suggestion to try another supplier (NN have been good to me in the past), but as I said, my arse must be the wrong shape/size, so I'm going to get a seat tailored to it. Would have gone with a Corbin, as I had a really comfortable Corbin on an old Honda I had, but the price is beyond silly and I read on this forum that Corbin customer service is even worse than Calamander's.

Hey ho, we live and learn - I spent £25 quid to figure out that my arse isn't Sargent shaped and not to give any more money to Calamander...:blagblah

I'm waiting on word from Salamander about the newly released Versys seat by Sargent. They only give a 7 day return window here compared to 30 days in the States. I have dealt with them when I bought the seats for my 12GS and was more than happy with the service. I suppose I can understand Mr Williams annoyance with the small blobs of glue as he will probably now have to sell this seat as a second, but I bet they'll still not take a loss on it.

I can only guess that Shaun's been at Calamander too long and needs to go and do something else with his life. He was a fairly regular contributor to Ixion when I was on there, more than 10 years ago and was renowned for providing great customer service..... :nenau

Recently (June 2012) dealt with this guy direct when I ordered a seat for my GS direct from Calamander & there was a very small tear in the material. He couldn't have done more to assist & for what its worth I have no hesitation in recommending him & the seats.

their terms and conditions mean jack shit. they're liable for return postage on faulty goods.

I had a similar experience with Calamander. I think its just the one bloke - and he comes across as being a tad grumpy.

Correct - but I can't be arsed to argue with him anymore. Refund landed in my bank on 30th May and I dropped £20 postage. Hey-ho, c'est la vie.

He'll just get no more business from me and he'll suffer this bad (but entirely factual) write-up. Had he been reasonable, refunded without complaint and generally shown good customer care, he'd have a recommendation. After all, the poor quality's not his fault, but his poor attitude is.

Had the seat been good quality, I would have had no problem selling it on here and losing a few quid - I bought it with that in mind.

So, don't use Calamander:barf, get your Sargent from Nippy's or somewhere else who respect their customers and want repeat business and recommendations.:beerjug:

"Wouldnt deal with Calamander again , Nippy Normans IMHO are much better at customer service."

Hmm, not just me then... Cheers Pablo, i feel better about being a awkward customer now...

:beerjug:

Poor attitude too

I agree with your comments. I too had a very very agressive response from this guy when I needed to return my seat. The seat was in pristine condition when I returned it and extensively packed and boxed. He was fine when buying the seat but very rude on the phone when it came to returning it. It's a one man band in Wales running the distribution on the UK. He really needs to be more respectful to customers.
