Service cost

Service costs

Does the 2007 1200 GS have Iridium spark plugs. Am led to believe that they are very expensive but should last for at least 30,000 miles at minimum.

Most folk only come here for a moan and groan - all the others are out there too busy enjoying themselves! As for cheaper servicng costs due to less bodywork, the KTM only has side tanks that take only a couple of minutes to remove, also the BMW has longer service intervals.

As for servicing costs - come on folks..........what do you expect? These companies are in business to offer us a service and make money. We expect - they deliver. If you are unhappy with service then vote with your feet and a 'poor' dealer will either change or fade away.

Remember there is always two sides to every story

It is a two way street of course - we should treat them with respect and expect the same in return.

Stop reading the forums, ok I will then. I bought the bike on BMW's supposed legendary reliabiltiy and customer service. Both which have been disproved in a short time of ownership. I asked how much services cost was told around a certain amount, then bills start coming in at double that. My wifes Guzzi 1200 Sport has proved more reliable and cheaper to service, my Passat is cheaper to service. One member here had his first service charged at £110, I was quoted £240 by the same dealer and both bikes were supplied by them. Also the annual inspectons were never mentioned. I asked lots of questions and only really got half answers.

I am going to sell the GSA and return to Japenese bikes, I know I can rely on these so if anyone out there wants a low mileage 57 GSA let me know.

What I find really amazing is the inability of Honda in particular to take on bmw with their own proper adventure bike. I think they would have an instant following from many people like yourself mark.

and still waiting for the name of the £86 p/h suzi dealer

I will be interested to know if our US Gs'er has the same costs to bear ? With one foot in the UK and the other in the US I know in most cases whatever we have to pay in England e.g. £450 the US pays the same in dollars ($450). If the US GS'er is expected to pay $900 for his BMW service - is he still happy with it? :monkeypiz or does he not agree we are just getting scammed.

Service Costs???

I have just booked my 07 GS in for its 6k service and annual inspection and when asked, was informed that it would be around £310.... apparently the brake fluid is now changed at 1 year and then every 2 thereafter..can anyone confirm this??:confused:

Watch to make sure they are not charging you for the 6000 mile service AND the annual as some dealers have been known to do that. If your bike is an '07 model it should not be fitted with the servo brakes so changing the brake fluid should be a much simpler operation than on the servo brake models.

Why not ask the dealer to show you the service schedule to confirm if the brake fluid needs changing. I know on the later bikes with the servos that came with the braided brake hoses as standard that the brake fluid changes take place every 2 years now, compared to every year on older models.

Thanks Bob... out of interest I'm going to phone another dealer tomorrow for a comparison and I'll then take it from there.

Just booked my 56 plate GSA in for 6000 mile service at independant dealer in cardiff next week. Quoted £160 using only genuine BMW parts. . . . . .

This sounds about right but it can differ depending on what spec your bike is.
Have a look at the service schedual that I posted in this thread I think it will match your bike (however it is for a 12000 service so no gearbox oil change for you). Bob is right that the brake fluid is changed every two years but it is first changed after 12 months as some bikes can be waiting at the distribution center for quite long periods so to be on the safe side it has been recomended to be replaced at the first annual service. However if the dealer is using the correct labour codes the 6000 and annual service will be just about the same labour time give or take 5 mins and the additional labour items to complete the annual part of the service should be billed seperatly.

I hope that this makes sense, and at SSB the charge would be about £270 I think. ( I will have to put my labour rate up to compete with the prices quoted here)

GS service + correct oil!

I've just been checking out dealers for my 12000 mile service on the 1200 GSA - I'm right in the middle of being miles from 4 dealers! . . so phoned all 4 for a quote & GOT 4 TOTALLY DIFFERENT QUOTES;
1.£under£200 / 2. £200 / 3. £246 & 4. £300 best advice and cheapest was Pidcocks in nottingham + also the only dealer who says that they ARE USING THE CORRECT BMW APPROVED OIL!!; CASTROL GP 20/50
This oil is best suited to the GSA + being the correct grade 20/50 suits the higher summer temperatures / continental use.
i've a tad more on this here; http://www.adventurebiketours.co.uk/...adventure.html
As far as I can tell (+BMW have confirmed to us) CASTROL 20/50 is the correct oil for the 1200 GSA - but quite a few BMW dealers don't use it!
+ if you're running with their own sourced synthetic from new - the bike won't get properly run in - again ALL BMW'S own advice.

So, for me . . I'd phone around & get quotes + go with a dealer who;
1. gives good advice / best price
2. uses the correct grade oil.

I wonder if lack of correct grade oil is a reason / part reason that so many GS users report high oil consumption??? I've heard 1 litre every 1 or 2 k!
My GS uses 1 litre of GP in aprox . . well I'm at 12 k now & still not used the whole litre top up :bounce1

Shouldn't need to pay £300 for a service!
I had the 6000 done in Budapest for £120 - they used the correct Castrol GP 20/50
+ Just booked the bigger 12000 mile at Pidcocks nottingham, who have confirmed;
They will be doing the brake fluid change, all at £200 inclusive.. . . & also use the correct grade CASTROL GP 20/50.
+ bike does NOT need gearbox oil change until 2 years / 24 000 miles.

I have been quoted £240 for 6000 mile/annual service (Motorrad Glasgow), they said the brake fluid is changed at first year and then every second year. I was doubtful about this as I know brake fuid is normaly changed every two years, however as someone pointed out, bikes can be sitting around for a while before being registered (I know of some Hondas unregistered for over a year) I guess £240 for a service is normal nowadays.
