silly question about valve springs...

I think thats what I'm looking at when I peek down the oil filler holey.

I little bit of wee escaped when I noticed a sort of whitish colour on it, then saw that the ones in the haynes manual also had a white kind of colour on them.

Is there a reason for this white stuff? A marking detail? - I've not noticed it before, but then again, I'm looking at a lot of bits on the bike in more detail these days, in the vain hope that I might understand more about Mr Tractor.

Do you mean a soft white goo rather like mayonaise, or white markings on the valves?

Well it looks like someones put a white marker pen and dabbed the valve springs.

No hellmans down there at the moment.

Valve springs are color coded by the manufacturer to aid identification at the point of assembly.
I would imagine that the springs for the GS differ from those of the ST for instance.

BMW valve springs have a dab of paint on them to show which end of the spring goes is installed against the cylinder head. There seems to be a little confusion about this as I've read a thread recently where an untouched bike had the springs installed the wrong way round, possibly from new.

They're not progressive or dual rated AFAIK, so know sure what the real issue is?

Muuuuuummm....

I cant help it, it keeps happening whenever I tackle something new on the bike.

And as I intend to keep learning about this combineharvester, maybe I should invest in wee proof undergarments.
