got it fitted. no wiring modifacations needed, just needs plugging in. there is enought wire on its supplied loom to locate the reg/rect behind the side panel next to the battery.
The ***/*** has been the only been the only unreliable part on my VFR , two failed before I relocated it to a cooler spot and fitted a oversize item with heavier wiring , so there is no way I would change to one.

what on earth were you doing with it !!!! i have lost count of the jap bikes i have had, they have all had combined reg/rect and i have never had any issues with them and never known of anyone else have any issues but of courrse if you over load them they will have cooling issues and potentialy get damaged.

i cant tell you the charge rate at the moment because i only have a 10a multimeter. is there anyone near clacton with a clamp type ammeter who i can pop round to and see howmany amps this thing will supply. will be back when i can find out

Bit off topic, but I've found this a great little book, "Classic Boxer Charging, self help for the electrically challenged, BMW twins 70-95" by Rick Jones.(does read a bit like an advert for Motorrad Electrik though).
Think I got it from Motorworks, anyone else got it?

Yes I have a copy. Very well written for the laymen.
Worth the $$ to own. And the construction of the book/pages are laminated to withstand "greasy digit's"!!!

These things get quite hot - if your battery is fully charged the are burning off up to 400 watts.

The VFR had a 30 amp ***/*** and a 320 watt/ 27 amp generator, just not a big enough margin of safety.

The OEM unit also had the connector block moulded in the unit so the connectors got hot too and could go "dry" and heat up even more.

It was replaced with a second hand 42 amp unit with the connector block about a foot away from the unit ,and this has been trouble free so far.

I've got one of these electrex rr45 fitted to my r100. It's mounted on top of the air cleaner. I noticed the other day that the black wire (earth) between the reg/rec unit and plug is fried from heat and is now broken. This wire is bridged with the brown wire at plug. Everything seems to be working as normal but sure does'nt look good. Any advise
