In order to remove the gearbox and after that the clutch, my copy of the BMW service manual and my Clymer manual both tell me to use BMW special tools 23 1 820 & 11 5 640.

My experience of special tools is that they are expensive & can take ages to obtain.

Does anyone know if these special tools are really required or if there are any work-arounds that can be utilised? If they are required, is there a quick and inexpensive known source?

Cheers

I don't know if you need these tools or not, what i can tell you is you won't be able to get them from a dealer as they are non-resale tools.

The Full part numbers are..
80 00 0 115 640 £18.70
80 00 0 231 820 £18.70

These are cost prices excluding VAT.

I work at a MINI dealership but unfortunatly I would loose my job if I sold them to you.

Good Luck with this, sorry I can't help more.

Which special tools are you talking about?.
If its just the screw-in gearbox supports, you can make a pair from 8mm studding or bolts of about 75mm length with their heads cut off and a screwdriver slot filed in the top.Remove one of the top bolts from the 'box to check for dimensions/thread etc.

Interesting. My local dealer has sold me 80 00 0 115 640 but cannot get hold of 80 00 0 231 820. I've decoded to make that out of some M8 threaded bar, as suggested.

If you are replacing the gearbox by itself, without the swingarm/bevel/shaft all still attached you don't need the guide pins.

It just pushes into place.

You only really need guides if the complete drivetrain is still all altogether and your doing the job on your own.

You can use 8 mm bolts for these both tools.
For 11 5 640 use it in locking hole in the clutch. Left side around 9.00 o'clock

Just cut the head of in 23 1 820.
