I'll be there in two weeks hoping to fit both these passes in plus a few more.

Just heard this evening (June 1) from our local guides that Stelvio is closed due to an avalanche. We are due there June 3 so will let you know.

What condition is the road in after the winter?

Some bits are wet, some bits are dry, some bits are smooth, some bits are a bit broken up after the frosts.

This is a bit of a guess as I havn't left Norfolk today, no I tell a lie, I was in Suffolk for about 10 minuets earlier, but thats how the roads have been in the past few years when I have been up there eating Marmot burgers. :D

Oh ye very good:rolleyes:

Will be on my K1300R this time so don't want the surface too bad:nenau

Doesn't look too appealing, does it:(

nope it looks feckin shite:tears! For me big cols are best served in bright, warm sunshine with heat haze on the side. Shitty cold days don't float da boat. I'm going to delay my stelvio day until end of month when I will be on my return leg and hope for aforementioned sun.

Once the high passes are open (earlier in our region-the Grossglockner opened May 1st) they can be subject to bad weather at any time, delaying a trip until later is no guarantee of good conditions. This is always a problem if you have a fixed day to do any of these roads. Have a plan B if you are planning to use a high pass as part of a route even in high summer.

I would:thumby:

Never seen the attraction of the Stelvio, can't understand what all the fuss is about:nenau

quite aware of how the weather changes in the mountains butt, but my point is that waiting a couple more weeks after a particurly bad winter is more likely to help - after all this is still 'spring'?! lol

I don't know about the Stelvio because I don't live near it but as far as our area was concerned it was not a especially "bad" winter. The 'glockner opened on time at the beginning of May. 5 years ago they didn't get it open until the middle of May. As for it being still spring again that may be so on the Stelvio but here in southern Austria it is summer. I often reply to these threads because the "I was there on the 5th of June and it was snowing/blisteringly hot/foggy/packed with Japanese tourists" posts do only apply to that day. And it is a fact that the high passes can be closed for bad weather at any time of the year. Obviously where we are I monitor the Grossglockner daily and I would say that in the five years we have been here you have on average as much chance of finding it closed in May as in August.

Good luck with the weather on the Stelvio, from when it opens-Mid June is about normal-it is more down to luck not dates as to the conditions on the day.
