Stelvio is open!

John
Which site do you use to find out if the Grossglockner is open. Will be in teh area next week & wouldnt want to waste a journey.

Baz

Thanks Johnny. However the link you provided doesnt give real time info ( Phone for up to date info). So the question really should have been is there a web site which will give me an idea of conditions prior to me setting out?

Sadly the Grossglockner company are only now joining the 20th century. They put out no info on their website, only sometimes on Facebook and use Twitter to send out random messages rather than up to date info. You can look at the webcams which will give you a good idea http://www.grossglockner.at/de/service/webcams2/

If you could compare today with yesterday you would see what a difference a day makes. There was sleet on the top yesterday, warm and sunny today-I just looked at it's 9pm and it's 11 c at over 2,000 metres. Today was one of those perfect days here not a cloud in sight, I did the Nockalmstrasse instead-much more fun in my opinion.

Check the local forecasts, look at the webcams and you should be OK. Might even see you up there, look out for a grey 1150 with local plates usually with a gaggle of British bikes in tow.

Thanks John. Will look at the local forecasts, but at the moment I will be looking at visiting on Tuesday, though this is flexible

Seeing as the thread has moved from the Stelvio to the Glockner

This one's good to keep an eye on although it's not necessarily indicative of the cloud cover a few hundred meters lower. Was up there Wednesday & the cloud closed in during lunch & the temp dropped to 2.5c

There you go, 20 seconds................ever heard of Google:P

As has been pointed out there is no info about current conditions on the Grossglockner site other than the webcams. Even the scheduled road closures for special events are only shown on the German version-nothing in English. The use Twitter to send out standard messages so that a few weeks ago when the road was closed by a heavy snowfall they sent out (in German) " the perfect family outing" Sometimes we do get an Email on days when it is closed but never before 11am so well after guests have left to go there.

We had a good run to teh Stelvio today, Left Fussen at 08:30 and made it to Canazei at 15:00. Not too busy fortunatley, and the weather was fantastic. It was @ 16C at the top of the pass and 32c in the valleys. Now have 3 days to play in tyjhe Dolomites before we head home:beerjug:
