Struggling with Basecamp?

No answer whatsoever, as I use BaseCamp for all my needs, eschewing crappy third party software and the problems it appears to bring.

Nutty is your man. He's got it cracked.

Hold on a moment, "it's shite", "wimps", "crappy third-party software"?!! Sorry, since when was route planning supposed to be a test of your manliness?! Just 'cos you have spent hours and hours painstakingly working your way through the deep depths of Garmin Basecamp and have finally worked out how to use it without having to do a full course in it every time you want to use it does NOT automatically mean that, by default, everything else is shit and useless.

Don't come up with shit either about how easy Basecamp is to use either because, lets face it, there wouldn't be all the threads and questions from people asking how to use it! By you own statement, "Nutty has it cracked", you've inadvertently admitted that its not an easy and intuitive piece of software otherwise, there'd be nothing to "crack", would there?

The reason Motogoloco is becoming popular is that, like Ronson products, it does what it says on the tin. Simply. And without having to inflict yourself with a weeks course of Youtube videos and fucking around to get it to finally do what you want it to.

Of course, you may enjoy sitting for hours at home going head to head with the Garmin software in a darkened room on your computer before eventually getting it to work but I (like many I suspect) prefer being out riding our bikes....

Each to their own I guess!

There's lots of very good posts and threads in the GPS section, along with some very good video guides on U-tube.

Try this one for starters: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/430575-Basecamp-Waypoints-Via-points-etc

Read it from the start to the end. Becksy, who started the thread managed. If he (and others) can, so can you. If you can't be arsed to start at the beginning, go straight to post #13. The instructions relate to a Mac, which was the computer Becksy was using. Using a PC is similar, for sure.

Hi Wapping and thanks for this. I am going to have one last go and read what you advise, in FULL. Will report back sir

Most but not all mapping progs require an internet or celular connection, garmin software is one of the few that you do not need a connection of any type to use it, i find this to be for me at least the best alternative, no wifi or cel connection needed, just download the maps and software onto your macbook or laptop/netbook and you are good to go, what could be better, the software even works with OSM maps that you can download for free, so if you are the bargain type its at no cost to you, what more could people want. Hang on a minute it doesnt work with my ipad or iphone, well not wanting to get into a debate on apple vs other options, thats just the way it is, and until garmin or apple do something about it thats it end of story.
So choose what software and device you wish to use, learn how to use both and enjoy the fact you have a very powerful combination that if used correctly will without a doubt get you there.

That's true but I'm sure that most people, if they're going away on a bike holiday, tend to do their main route planning before they leave home and upload the various routes onto their device. Any other local planning, whilst actually on holiday, I've done on the Garmin unit itself with the assistance of a map or phone. Do that many people take lap tops with Basecamp on them on holiday then??! Jesus! I go on holiday to get away from things like computers!!

Just my opinion of course!

You still unfortunately need to have Basecamp installed. Have it running in the background whilst you do your route on Motogoloco. When you're done, save the route and then click the GPX export button. Immediately switch to Basecamp screen and your new route will be sitting there in the left hand bar. All you then have to do is highlight it and click the "upload to my device" button at the top left of the screen. Assuming you have your Nav V plugged in, the new route will immietely be transferred to it. It always sounds more involved writing it down than it is. In reality, it's very quick to both plan the route and transfer it to your device.

Unless you are using a Mac, Mapsource remains an option. Plotting a route is very easy and you can use the same maps as on your device!

Plus, as with Basecamp... You do not need an internet connection!

Got to the bit saying GPX file and asks me to open, save or cancel. Hit save and check basecamp and nothing in left hand bar, same if I hit open, any ideas?

Thanks Paul

So, you refuse to take your laptop and its BaseCamp or Mapsource software.... But then use the GPS device to plot a day's route.... Or use your phone as a GPS device / computer to help you....... and you want to get away from what things, precisely?

PS Excellent news that you take a map though.

Where are you saving the GPX file to?

When you save a file it has to go somewhere..... Where has yours gone to? Is it sitting in Downloads, waiting for you to do something with it?

If you click on 'Open' instead of 'Save' it should open in BaseCamp automatically. It might though require that you have BaseCamp open already.

Procedure using a PC this will depend on you having already saved your route on their site correctly.
in motogoloco Go to your my routes, click routes in the pane on the left. then go to the little icon above the search box that looks like a head with shoulders click this and then choose your route by clicking on its name,a box will open covering the map window select export and another window will open, select your format if using garmin this will be gpx click this and select save and tell it where to save to or it will save to its default location, or you can just set it to open with, and select basecamp as the default application, again this is for pc only. If you selected save at the last screen you will now need to open basecamp and ensure you have a folder or list selected in the top left pane, and then go to file at the top left and select import into and a window will open where you will navigate to find the gpx file you saved to your selected location, once found you highlight it with a single mouse left click and then at the bottom of the window you are in you will see an open button click this and if you have done it right it will appear somewhere in your base camp window next to the map bottom left.

Ok how does one export the route from Motogoloco on an iPad to a desktop machine, ideally need to go from iPad to Nav 5.

I am giving it a quick tryout to see if it is worth the effort, but it is already proving to be problematical - do you have an answer to the above questions?

did you manage to sort it
