Looking for a first clue as to where to start....

2000 1150, 120,000 miles. Simple ride around town, noticed a slight weirdness in a downshift. Felt different. I think I was in second or third, but as I came up to a stop sign, I realized I was in a higher gear.

All I could get was 4th, 5th and overdrive. Got the bike home (2 miles max) and stopped, kept it running and was able to get it into 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and neutral, but now 4, 5, 6 are gone. Sounds a bit crunchy when I shift.

Linkage all looks good and solid, so it would appear to be internal.

Where do I start? Thanks in advance for any help.

Have a read here Greg. Hopefully you will find something to help you.

Failing that, Steptoe might have some thoughts as to what might be the problem. :thumb2

thanks for the help with the link. First thing tomorrow I will take the linkage and shift lever apart and clean and grease. Simplest thing first...then I'll see.

I will update and hope it isn't something more serious.

I had to strip and grease my linkage a year or two ago and it made a great difference Greg.

Do let us know how you get on. :thumb2

Sorry, saw the title and expected something totaly different :blast

Remove the starter cover(its only one screw) the gearchange input shaft is on a spline, check if it is tight, if it is not tight on the splines you can get sort of what you describe.
I had to remove it and clean the "gap" with a baby hacksaw, clean the splines and bolt it back up made a world of difference to mine.
