Which oil ?

I've done a couple of trips of that length and mine didn't need any top up.

In fact I bought oil when I got the bike and not had to open the bottle in 12K miles.

Even if yours does burn a little I'd rely on picking some up en-route.

just read through this using the search tool….and I'm more confused than ever …I too like the OP is taking the bike some 2500 miles away soon and was thinking of taking a litre of oil with me like i did on the old hex heads, just in case a top up is needed. Having constantly been monitoring the oil in the sight glass after 3500 miles its not used any !!! so I'm thinking of not bothering of taking any with me now at all.

still confused as the proper oil to use , I have always gone by the handbook and if ever a problem was to arise ….well thats what the book said use !!!

the watercooled engine does not consume any engine oil between oil changes.

ie , not like the older boxers. So , just ride it and no need to worry about carrying oil.

Mine needs a top up, at the half way mark after 5k miles, so my WC is using oil:jager Ordered some castrol 1 from ebay £11.95 free postage.

the oil level on the sightglass window is very very sensitive to the bike's position.

I wouldn't bother topping up at the half way mark, wait until it's is almost onto the bottom of the circle.

heard great reports about Motul 300v 15-50 regarding improved gear changing, going to give it a try

Just bought 8L of Castrol Power 1 Racing 5W-40 in 1L bottles off eBay for £60 delivered aus Deutschland. Item 310904743178. Buying 8L meant the second 4L cost only €3 extra delivery.

For my next service I got an oil-inclusive price first, then asked for a price if I supply the oil; my oil at £30 makes the service £44 cheaper as they quoted an extra £74  for including their identical oil......

Following on from the GSF discount thread for this weekend I checked the manual to see what grade my 2016 R1200GSA and it reads

SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2, Additives (e.g. molybdenum-based) are not permissible because they can attack coated components of the engine, BMW Motorrad recommends BMW Motorrad ADVANTEC Ultimate oil

Which I guess is only available from Motorrad.
