Which oil ?

I said that:beerjug:

Ive just ordered some oil to do the service and as motorworks are supplying the other bits I'm getting the oil from them too and there updated spec says 15W 50 now as opposed to whatever the handbook says ( i am not a LC owner ) so i will be guided by them !

God I've found this so confusing.... Easily done.... So... I've checked with the Guro at Williams Manchester ..... And he says 15/50 power 1 Castrol...:bow:bow and that is for my 2013 63 plate triple ..... Sorted:D

The correct spec oil is 5w 40 and you have had 15w 40 put in how does it seem compared to the 5w

I wish I could help but my man at Balderston's does the oil stuff - he could be putting in anything!

Always works though and I didn't have to worry about it! Why worry about something I just don't understand?

Can't notice any difference... But hey... What do I know....... I just ride it

If you can't notice any difference then we could most likely use the cheaper to buy grade of 10w 40 and all will be fine I wonder why BMW specifify the 5w 40
I bet by now there are loads out there running on 10w 40 and don't even know it.
I was in an independent garage the other day and all they have and use is 10w 40 .

I'm running mine on the specified grade but like you what do I know

Happy riding Terry

Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 full synthetic seems to meet the same specs (including JASO) at the expensive BMW/Castrol and for a fraction of the cost.

BMW handbook calls for JASO MA2, while Rotella T6 is rated JASO MA. The differences are small - but they are mostly about static and dynamic friction properties, which could be significant with a wet clutch? Not that I think it would matter a fig TBH.

just read through this using the search tool….and I'm more confused than ever …I too like the OP is taking the bike some 2500 miles away soon and was thinking of taking a litre of oil with me like i did on the old hex heads, just in case a top up is needed. Having constantly been monitoring the oil in the sight glass after 3500 miles its not used any !!! so I'm thinking of not bothering of taking any with me now at all.

still confused as the proper oil to use , I have always gone by the handbook and if ever a problem was to arise ….well thats what the book said use !!!

The LC doesn't use enough oil for you to worry about it. If you need any oil for any other reason the manual and or local BMW dealer will be happy to advise you.

The LC does not use oil, but for long trips like yours I take 250ml standard 10/40 semi synthetic motorcycle oil. The amount you are mixing is negligible in the grand scheme of things.
