All,

At around 60mph on my 10k mile F8 I can clearly hear what I can only describe as a “wow wow wow” sound presumably from the rear wheel. Any faster and the wind obliterates any sound whatsoever. Any slower than say 40 and everything seems normal.

Originally I was convinced that the noise was a consequence of my well used, squared off Skorpion tyres and thought nothing of it and instead procured a new pair of Tourances.

With the new tires fitted I had the wheels balanced professionally and the bearings checked (no notchiness).
I personally find the Metzeller tyres are not that much of an improvement over the Pirellis, however, most ANNOYINGLY of all is the fact that the wowowo sound is still there and is intensifying.

I can hear it the most when I carry a pillion or when I have panniers and luggage on the back. Note that I cannot make out a wobble of any kind, I mean the bike handles as well as ever but something is definitely not ok.

Are the bearings fecked? Is the chain about to snap? Should I get someone to check the tension on the spokes?.......should I change the air filter? :blast

There are no dents on the rims.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any ideas?

Cheers.

Wot Greggers said - check the chain tension / condition

Have you checked your chain tension?G

+1 more:thumb2

Sounds very much like you have a tight spot in the chain. Have you got a centre stand? If so, spin the rear wheel till the chain is at its tightest, then adjust. These chains are quite loose compared to a sports bike to allow for the suspension travel.

wow wow

Did you also check the sprocket carrier bearing ?

I would have said chain too, but work down the list of possibles.

Thanks for all your input.

The chain seems fine to me but I'll get it checked by someone who knows exactly what to look for.

I'm taking the bike in to dealers tomorrow and will keep you informed. :beerjug:

Are you taking it to a dealers before or after it's checked by someone who knows what to look for?:blast

Good point,

Perhaps I'm totally naive in thinking the beamer guys know what they're doing?

:(

...so after leaving the bike at the dealers for over three weeks I picked it up yesterday and am told that the rear wheel bearings have been replaced.

I'll try riding with a pillion soon and see if that's solved the problem or not.

My fronts were fucked after 1800 ... but that's another story.

Why did it take them three weeks ??

I've got to say though that these are basic mechanical things - being able to check chain tension, bearing condition etc ... is something that every bike rider really should know... Why the fcuk is the first call to the dealer ??

...yes I agree however,

after spending the better half of 10K GB Sterling on a bike, I feel anyone should be entitled to take their queries to the dealership as often as they want if their machine doesn't perform to their satisfaction within the 2 year guarantee period. Furthermore, this forum has highlighted the fact that there are known issues with chains and bearings on F8 an sister F6 models. Get them to do the work and get your money's worth is what I say!
Having said that I still had to pay for the dam things .....did get a discount though.
