Where makes a good base for visiting all the WW1 sites/museums in France/Belgium area?

Hoping to get over for 5 days in September via ferry to Zeebrugge

Any recommended Hotels would be appreciated preferably in easy walking distance of a town centre  with on-site parking

Thanks all!

Hi All,

just wanted to let everyone know that the Hortensia is now under new management, i stayed there last month for a couple of nights and im going back next month with the GF.

Michaël & Véronique move their car out so you can park your bikes in the garage ( 5 bikes when we were there )

Tea on arrival, continental breakkie plus scrambles eggs and bacon

cant rate highly enough and only 66 euros a night for a twin room

Anything cheaper? 66 Euros A NIGHT  I would want a week for that amount...YHA is a good bet in this country, use them all the time. There must be some International Hostels in that area surely.

I like hostels, you meet some very interesting people. OK and some nerds, but that goes with anything.

The guy asked for a hotel, near a town centre, with secure parking, 66 euros a night between 2 people is good value IMHO.

What hotel do you no that you can get with the above criteria for less than ten euros a night, let me no and i will book it for my next trip :thumb2

The Old Tom Hotel - Ypers

The above hotel is right on the town square in Ypers
I stayed there last Tuesday. Food was reasonable and the manager Filip gave us use of a secure garage 5 min walk away from the hotel. However there is free parking in the square and it looks a safe enough area. There are lamp posts to chain your bike to if you felt the need.:thumb

Look no further, right in the main Square over looking the Cloth Hall. Family rooms available. Book early as this place is popular. Tip.... always ask for a room overlooking the front i.e the square. Its just been refurbished as well. There is covered parking in the rear yard but never once had a problem parking bike or car outside the hotel. :thumb2

I was there at the weekend and its still a building site and nothing has gone on since i was there two months ago. Its months away from being ready and by the looks of things the parking at the rear has been built over ( maybe wrong tho)

Hi mate, new here, in fact just collected a 1150gs earlier today!! I have visited the WW1 sites for the last 4 years on my R1100s, and have always stayed at Varlet Farm B&B www.varletfarm.com which is about 5 mins from the centre of Ypres. Secure indoor parking for the bikes, and Charlotte who owns the B&B is about the most knowledgeable person i have ever met. No hesitation in recommending, its a great place to stay. Cheers.

I ended up staying at the Novotel in Ypres town centre as it seemed quite 'PremierInn'ish' which is where I normally stay when on trips in the UK.

I'm pleased to report it was an excellent choice albeit a little bit pricey at £200 for 2 nights  but did include a 'as much as you can eat' breakfast buffet each day so I probably ended up getting my moneys worth :augie

Location is excellent about 200 yards from the Menin Gate, clean and comfortable en-suite rooms with UK TV channels. There's also free internet via 2 computers in the lobby area which was handy.

If you like a bit of comfort and don't mind paying a bit more I'd definately recommend the Novotel :thumb2

ypres

I was out there a couple of weeks ago, (basically collected my new GSA and went to the ferry) - on the way back we had the opportunity to be guided around flanders field by a local on a motorbike, radio comms, etc.

this guy really knows his stuff and im sure will recommend a decent and cheap place to stay - probably in his home town.

edit: Im a knob arent I, didnt see big nick has already been and gone. We stayed at the novotel too (as hadnt met yoris, the guy who runs the guides). did the job nicely.

Can second Varlet Farm- we stayed there when undertaking a family WW1 tour a few years back. By far the best accommadtion with very knowlegeable owners. It is a bit out in the country so plenty of bike parking too.
