ZFE and switch gear update.

When the ecu on my 2018 model r1200gsa needed replacement the new one had to be fully programmed at the factory including the one off factory written update that was unique for my bike to retain computer assist pro functions on a Basic model.
It might mean your secondhand ZFE unit may need to be reprogrammed if one or more options on it is different from on your original unit

they might have sold you that story....

the VIN tells them the part number, they bolt it on the bike and plug it in - the dealer tool online, checks the VO and interrogates the mess it sees - between the tool, DE and and the tech, they come up with plan to fire the software cannon at the bike - it first flashes the software BMW DE like the look of, then writes the coding (setup)

if your VO is accurate (as per factory build) - and no dodgy extras put on by animals are us, or you paid for an official retrofit toy (ABS Pro, Hill start, Extra Rider Modes etc.) and the parts guy forgot to do his paperwork, so BMW record don't show a toy you officially bought it - the Tool will know exactly what to do and will just do it

I never had any problems like this with my 1150 in 100,000mls, just a shame they are a heavier bike or I would be straight to Albatross for his.

Well, bike is all sorted by Williams BMW Manchester. The total came to£725 and to be fair Levi and Olivia there were very helpful and kept the price down on the labour after the new ZFE was fitted it through up a break in one of the wires in the loom. So, back on the road again. Now for the next job, the gearbox seal... For them to do it it's £1300. Decisions, decisions.

if it needs a clutch at the same time not the end of the world

main dealers do the same work but its up to 3 times the cost

Is that just to do the seal? Or including a new clutch?

How many miles on the bike. My clutch lasted 158.000 miles, it may not need it. Though I've not recapped the whole thread. If it was contaminated then that's a different scenario.
It's only done 61,000mls. I did say they may as well put one in while it's there.

I have a 2011 GSA that had done 8800 miles looked like brand new when I got it - its clutch is 100% gone - took the starter out at 9500 miles the other day and its at 9mm or something - magically NO dust ??? the moron that never braked, never wore the twist grips even a smidge, and never got the exhaust blue in any way must have pretended it was an automatic

I also have a 2007 GS where I spent 15 years trying to never abuse the clutch in any way shape or form and it started slipping at 35k miles - and again the original owner who did the first 5500mils had never understood what the throttle was for

estimating 8 x 150 is 1200 - new clutch is 800 doesn't equal 1300
Mine was quoted at almost £1,400 by BMW to fit the new clutch. I got a 10% discount because they are a sponsor of our local bike club. so I ended up paying £1,220 all done. I'm not complaining about that as the price just for the clutch was £650.00 ish.
20 years and 158.000 miles. It won't need another one. 😁
