Can anyone who has had a set of forks replaced, under warranty, please post the details here for me. ie,mileage, dealer and age of bike, and when the work was carried out.

I'm just trying to suss something out for myself,so please just post if you have had the forks replaced.

If you're not sure if your forks are good or not, remove the front wheel, hold the fork leg,and try to move the stantion backwards and forwards. If it goes clunk clunk, then that's not good.

Forks

Hi Vern,

Had my forks replaced at about 1000 miles and/or 3 months from new, early last summer.

New set are showing same problem now, a job to get sorted when I have the chance. ( Dealer has been warned! )

Cheers, Rick.

as you may well of read on here im on a quest to get my forks replaced just over 2000 miles and the nitride coating has worn off on the front of the fork leg and the clunking noise you mention is present , my local dealer is being pretty good so far as i did'nt buy the bike from them , but he is saying that there is no stock of parts or complete legs in the uk at the mo so the items are coming from bmw direct any further info and i'll keep you posted

I had a loose headstock at first service but that is all so far, however it only has 1,000 ish miles on it so far.

Forks!

Yes I have had my forks replaced last week, my HP2 has 21,000k on the clock. The coating had warn off and there was approx 2mm sloop in the legs:mad:
The cause was the flang on the axle nut had broken off and this made the forks spread apart a little which made the axle spacer rotate. the axle assembly was loose for a long time.
The dealer was the only one that touched the front end before the problem was noticed.
The out come has been great:thumb

finally im having my forks sorted by my local dealer , as i have it they are replacing the fork sliders ie the bottom of the fork leg , i must say that my local dealer [ cannon bmw of braintree essex has been very understanding and have reacted in a very positive manner] but i can assure you that once i have the bike back i will be taking the forks to chris hockey [endurotech ] to be modded as per my other forks

Hendo

how did you go with the side tanks you had on the hp2. Ive got an order in for a hpn tank but am interested in your side tanks u had made that time. Did you work out a cost etc

just had mine replaced 2000 miles on the clock no off roading either , my local dealer cannon bmw of braintree essex has been great [i never bought it from them ] had to to wait about 5 weeks for parts to arrive from bmw , but i was ok with that as ive got a second set which have been modded for s/moto , i will be taking these to my suspenders man next week to have them modded as my others as i do not do much off roading 98% road and track days

I have a quite big play when i move the stantions backwards and forwards, i have Marzocci forks on my Husky too and there is very little or no play.
The coating is also worn off about 4-4,5 inches.

Problem is that BMW Sweden says this is normal wear, dealer is not willing to change anything if BMW Sweden dont take the cost.

Are there supposed to be any play?
Anyone who had the forks replaced for coating wearing off, are the new forks as bad as the old?

All info welcome

/Swede

It's not normal wear at all.The reason the coating is wearing off,is because one of the bushes in the fork leg is worn/broken up,and putting extra weight on the front off the fork leg, hence the coating worn off.

Tell Sweden Mbw to fall into line with the rest of europe and put a new set on,you've got well worn forks if the coating has gone.

I'm still convinced that there are a shed load of HP2 owners riding around with knackered forks, and don't know it,because they have never taken their front wheel out to change the wheel or tyre.

vern as we spoke in the pub the other week

i think the issue is down to the fact the zochis are too spindly. The KTM ADV has WP forks that are 3mm thicker and the main part of the leg is a good 10mm thicker, this stops the flex in the forks and therefore eliminates the latral wear in the bushes. Both the BM and the ADV weigh in at a similar kg and the balance is about the same. so this is the only thing i can put it down to.
If I were owning a HP2 right now i'd be looking on ebay for a set of 48mm WP forks and yokes or even a set of the newer 50mm ones off an mx525 ktm then a quick trip to Kais or K-Tech for a revalve (£200) and bobs yer uncle never a problem again. The only reason i mention this is because when your warrenty runs out a set of forks from BMW are gonna cost you guys a mint.
Happy hunting chaps.:thumb2

Forkin' HP2!

Guys,

Recieved my SECOND repalcement set of forks a few weeks back (yes, on my third set, after less than 3000 miles).

Marzocchi forks are, on the whole, good kit but the problem lies with the separate rebound/compression damping, split on either leg. The leg with the Rebound damping (offside here in the UK) has very little inside, no upper slider support and all the forces are concentrated on the lower bush, accelerating the wear.

The Marz. forks found on Husqvarna dirt bikes, (and in the WP units on KTM/Husaberg) have a fully adjustable cartridge damper unit in each leg which helps support the slider tube throughout its travel.

Talk to a good suspension tuner who knows Marzocchi forks - there are not many around but I will reccomend Chris Hockey of Endurotech (aka Dr Shox ).

My new replacement forks are transformed by his work. He has fitted fully adjustable cartridge units in both legs and tuned the damping to my requirements. A lot cheaper than replacing the forks with WP units and no hassle at all ( you would have to have new triple-clamps made and all the BMW switchgear/ignition stuff grafted back on etc. )

There you go. Hope this made sense and helped.

Cheers, Rick.

ps. I think BarkinPumpkin went down this route also for his supermoto-spec HP2 and is well suited.

oh yes i did, i can and did recommend chris hockey /endurotech i was the first to have this done by chris and its the muts nuts ,i do agree that the marzo's are a bit spindley bmw could do better ,go stand in the corner ''heinrich'' theyve admitted their mistake with the mega ''ballsup'' ohlins fitted as standard?? whatever you want chris can accommodate your requirements give him a call , ps im not on a retainer here but when someone can get it right for you its worth a mention, i am still keeping a close eye on the modded forks even though theyre not covered by warranty just as a matter of interest ,

I found this wear on my forks today.

Sorry Vern, I don't own an HP2 but this is disgraceful. It's ok BM changing them under warrantee, but what happens when it runs out???

As far as I would be concerned if they need replacing that often they are not fit for purpose and BM need to sort the problem out!!!!

I wouldn't buy an HP2 until they did.

Forks

Dirtydog,

Bet you a pint that it's not your bearings but the fork leg bushings!

Jack up the bike and whilst holding the front brake on, try pushing the wheel front to back. You will prob be able to see the play in the Rt hand fork leg!

In fact, ALL YOU HP2 OWNERS out there - go do this and post your findings! Should be interesting!

Cheers, Rick.
