Replacement forks

...this is disgraceful. It's ok BM changing them under warrantee, but what happens when it runs out???

At 14 months and 11000 miles my second replacement forks have just been ordered.
I've been onto BMW Customer Services and basically any future replacements outside of the two year warranty period will only be done free by a "goodwill gesture" through your dealer.
Past history of each bike, and others(?) will be looked at. Of course there was no admittance of a known problem (hmmmmmmmm).

Vern how did yor research go? BM admit to anything?

What I'd really like is a nice letter off BMW confirming ongoing free replacement. Or forks fitted that don't prematurely wear. Some hope :D

As far as I'm aware,Mbw are still "unaware of any problem with the HP2 forks"
so I don't know who keeps replacing them:rolleyes:

The one thing that did feck me off though, was the fact that any forks replaced under warranty, are only covered while the bike itself is still under warranty.Any spares you buy from mBw,carry a two year warranty, but any spares they replace as part of a warranty claim on a bike, are only covered until the warranty of the bike runs out.

Wollaston called to say bike is ready to collect in the morning. great service from them but have to say very dissapointed that it needed new forks in the first place. Only one month of warranty left to run and i cant help thinking i will be left out in the cold as regards any possible problems with this set of forks.

Well, my forks aren't being replaced after all. Clark's are going to replace the bushes in the legs. Maybe they're stronger than the originals? This is the first I've heard about replacing the bushes as opposed to replacing the actual fork legs (£600 each...). I noticed that mine were shagged only a few miles of riding the new bike from the show room!!! The computer is also playing up by not indicating when the fuel is low...:(

I'm pretty sure this will be my last bike from BM, I'm well pissed about stupid annoying problems with them, especially given how feckin expensive they are...

Ah,the old "replace them with more of the same crap" approach:clap

I can't find who it was, who had a set re built, and they put the forks back together wrong,so they ended up putting a new set on anyway.

Come on,step forward:nenau

You must have known about the fork problems before you bought it Stu :nenau ...I did
Mines going in for a new set of forks next week just before the warranty runs out..Maybe i will have to replace the bushes myself once a year from then on but nothings perfect and i can forgive it because it's such a blast to ride

I also wonder if people with supermoto wheels on them are having more trouble than people who use it off road ( what it was designed for ) due to the much higher forces places on the forks by sticky rubber and hard braking on the road :nenau

If the worst comes to the worst i will make some more triple clamps and try some white power forks in it

I did Gaz, but not to this extent! They all appear to be fecked, we're not just talking about a few bikes here, it's feckin disgusting it really is...:spitfire

I can't can't see riding quick on the road doing the bushes any more damage than 'belting' around off road...:nenau

As we've discussed before, this really ain't no enduro bike, it's to heavy and way to delicate for any serious abuse. We've both ridden off road enough to know the score!

That aside, it's a 'hoot' to ride and does make me smile. And still about the best bike to be able to commute to the off road destination comfortably then perform respectably in the dirt.

Value for money is piss poor, although the build quality does seem somewhat better than the 12gs...

What you have to remember is just because the bike is too big for a Welsh forest enduro ( and lets be honest so is a 520 KTM )...
It does not mean it's not a offroad bike...
Take the bike to many other places around the world where you have more open tracks and it would be spot on
The Uk is a tiny percentage of the world market..They are not going to design the bike just for us !
It is heavily influenced by the 900RR raced in the Dakar Rally...
Thats not a road bike

I got mine with just under 3000 miles on the clock in mid-august, it's now done 4600 and change. Have ridden two up, done some off-roading (including with DirtyDog - cheers chap :thumb2 ) and abused it on the 90 mile round trip commute to work.

Just changed the wheels back this morning to go off-roading tomorrow and the fork legs seem fine. RickA, the previous owner, had the forks reworked by Chris Hockey. I had a chat with the guy about what was involved and he gave a pretty convincing explanation about how they are good forks, but they need a full set of cartridges - with that they've done they should be fine and he uses them himself on his enduro bikes.

Touch wood - so far it's working for me :clap

Mine also clunk so I'll check 'em out tomorrow. Do BMW give a 1 or 2 year warranty on their bikes? I'm blowed if I can remember - I've had mine 15 months now so I hope it's 2 years...

After asking the guys at Wollaston what would happen to my bike, they assured me that the new forks were on order and would be fitted in due course.
Imagine my surprise when i went to pick the bike up today to find that they have only replaced the bushes. In my book that does not constitute fitting new forks to my bike. very dissapointed with the dealership and will hold on to the loan bike for as long as it takes for them to address the problem

Just checked mine and yep, the right hand fork leg clunks when pushed & pulled. I'll give BMW a call and see what they can do about it...

Checked mine and the coating is wearing off........i will jack it up tomorrow and check the freeplay:blast

With a major design fault affecting every HP2 sold, I'd say it's a good thing the bike is cheap to buy in the first place. You really do "get what you pay for". :D

.
I called my local dealer today and have arranged to send my bike in to them in 3 days time. I'll post what the outcome is as soon as they get back to me.

I've spent £ 600 getting my front forks sorted so don't really want them to mess about with them too much. New forks are the last things I want :blast
