:comfortDodgy description I know but on "brisk" acceleration at about 5K on to as near the redline as it will go bike seems a little hesitant to go. Not major lurching but almost as if its not getting fuel in quick enough? Have used additive to cvlean the jets and it does it with both the cat on and a Y piece. Any suggestions or soes anyone know a good chap in Lincolnshire that can help?:nenau

Money on coilpack breaking down.Do a search for how you can test it.

Around £100 a pair. You can guarantee if you replace the faulty one the other will soon follow. I don't know if they changed the design or manufacturer but the last pair I fitted to my 1150 seemed fine and I didn't have another problem. I had 5 on mine in 34k.

Thanks have made contact!! Where is the coil and is it an easy swap out?

It's the 6 inch (ish) long black thing that sits on top of the spark plugs right in the middle of each sticky out bit of the engine :D

And yes, 30 second job to change one, including wiping hands afterwards..just pull the plastic lead cover off the cyl head then get either pair of flat bladed screwdrivers (one will do it still) or the silly plastic tool in the tool kit and lever the thing out......undo the clip that's on the connector block between the HT lead and the secondary coilpack that should now be in your hand (be careful, that's about the only thing you can damage doing this!) then replace with a new one (which should have a GRAY end...if it hasn't, it's an old type one which burns out quicker)

Don't forget to push the plastic cover back on beforte you ride over it to test the new part (DAMHIK :blast)

Just read rthis again, am I being a muppet but is this on the plug underneath or on the "main|" plug?

OK, The PRIMARY coil is the one in the side, thru the rocker cover. The SECONDARY is underneath. The SECONDARY is there to clean up the emissions so is not the MAIN spark.

If the PRIMARY coil fails, the fuel being injected would just go through and come out the exhaust as neat(ish) fuel, also known as HYDROCARBONS, not good.......So, in the event of PRIMARY coil failure, the SECONDARY tries to burn off the HYDROCARBONS by firing off. (are you with me so far!)

To test is easy peasy. Run bike on centre stand, (not too long mind:eek:),use a pair of INSULATED plug pliers, (you'll understand why if you don't:D), and pull off the SECONDARY plug cap. Now of the PRIMARY is not working, the bike will REALLY mis-fire!!!

There is a slightly easier way to test the PRIMARY but it's very dependant on whether the bike is 'set up' right.

Try again on the other side, PM me if you don't get it!!!

Good luck!!!:thumb2

Smudger, i started bike up and pulled off one lower plug no difference so put it back and pulled off the other side engine stalled. I could re-start engine wirth lead orft but had to use throttle to keep it running. Soooooooooooooo any ideas on what bits broke??

Lets have a bit of user input here -You've done the test and now know which side isn't firing 100% - so what part do you think is broken ?.

Yes, that's correct well done. the main coil cap on the side that doesn't run correctly.

Now if you don't know what that is after all the explanations in this thread try doing a search. There are pictures and instruction in great detail on how to change it. No special tools required, and as said by fanum takes 2 minutes to change including wiping your hands

Sorry my stupidity is offending people, never worked on one of these before used to having reliable bikes, nice 2 strokes and inline fours with proper coils and points and stuff!!!

it's not offending me ?, Don't you see, you've tracked down the source of your problem.

All the answers you need are in this post, so you can be educated and help yourself instead of being dependant. :thumb

I'll offer any advice and help if only people will just try a little bit themselves as well (which you have but you don't seem sure about). Good luck :thumb

you've never ridden through Glencoe on a 500/4 in the rain then, with a great light show under the tank as first one, then two and three plug leads and caps break down and leave you on an very heavy 125.
Or a Suzuki TS125 that required a plug change 5 mins after starting and needed the points reset before coming home from every rally - could do it by eye in the end.
Only happened once on the R75/6, but that was going up the M6 in a snow storm with cherry red header pipes.
The Montesa Cota coil packed in when I was offroad solo in the middle of the Mourne Mts, lucky the tracks were downhill to the main road and then a 3 mile hike in wellies to a phone to arrange a recovery.
