My 330 M sport was nothing but trouble. It lived at the dealers having endless brake problems and an engine management light that came on intermittently, which for those who don't know means when it was with me, not when the dealer had it. I soon went back to Ford. My gs has been 100% reliable over 46k miles

@ Warlord # 365 - That is great news...:thumby:
As for some others my 2017 R1200GS-ADV has ZERO quality problems !
It even runs strong after a factory SW-update that cost me Nothing.
Is it perfect ? No of course it is not as it could use more power to make it more exiting and less weight is always good. Also the first 3 gears don't shift as smooth as the other 3 which shift perfect.
Do I think other bikes are more reliable or have better quality ? Show me one but I think a Urban G/S could be better on a Charlie Boreman trip because what you don't have can't break.
Of course on straights you can do only so much with 125 hp propelling 550-600 lbs weight but on twisty backroads with often less than perfect pavement a GS is faster and way more comfortable than any superbike.(except for the S1000XR)And believe me I know what I'm talking about as I have been riding the S1000RR on the track every year for the last 8 years...but track riding is a totally different activity than fast street riding as people who know know.
Would I rather have another bike for fast street riding than a GS ? No !
But I would love I lighter & more powerful one with 17 inch wheels right from the factory...:thumb2

I have a 1290s

Look .... I am passionate about bikes! Fuck .... I have steered my whole life around bikes! From dispatch rider in the late 80’s to DSA instructor in the early 90’s to Bike cop for the last 13 years .... I have earned my living riding bikes!

So why do I post and rant?

Passion!!!

I feel angry with BM! I’ve had two GS’s .... and whilst they’re a great Bike (and they are..) I just had problems after problems after problems with (in particular) the WC GS. In the end I got rid of it.

I guess my passion and my venting in here ... is to you guys because you put up with it! I’ve never known a manufacturer like it for delivering a bike with so many problems ; EWS, fuel strip, engine finishing, frame rust, switch gear, gearbox on the early models, loose spokes...... it goes on and on and on .... and BM’s response to it all is ...’oh yeah .... sorry about that .... wanna coffee from our free and lovely nespresso machine ...?’

Why do people put up with it?! And because they do ... BM do nothing about it!!

I’m not here to slag off your bike in a my bikes better than yours pissing competition, it just does my head in that the GS is such a good bike, has so much potential .... but one in ten is a complete lemon !!!

Come on BMW !!!! Sort your shit out!!! I will not buy another one of your bikes until you do...!

I think they must have saved all their really duff bikes for just for you you ;) my experience of 5 new 1200 GSes is completely different and I have probably done more miles on them than you ever did.

Nah, it's not that, just that Giles doesn't know how to change gear properly on a bike.

If I had all those issues I’d feel exactly the same, but I haven’t had any of them in the past 7 years of TC and more recently WC ownership, so for now at least I’ll stick with BMW. Actually I did have corrosion issues on the TC but I only cleaned it a couple of times per year hah

It makes no odds to me what you ride, but 1000 miles is hardly enough miles to get to know a bike, especially when you’ve probably done many multiples of that on the GS.

I ran my Rallye alongside my 1290 for the first 5000 miles, and had several moments where I’d have got rid of the KTM & kept the GS, but then everything fell into place on it. All joking and piss taking aside, it’s a shame you didn’t stick with it, as it sounds like the more suitable bike for your style of riding.
But I made my mind up on the gs after 300 plus .
Again sorry if you can grasp the concept that when you know sometimes things aren’t quite right . I agree with you 100 % on the engine but the chassis for me just did not work , I found the same on my 1200s multi , I did around 4000 on that but still could not find the connection . I was disappointed but the gains outweighs the the way I can push the bm , once Ktm have the suspension sorted maybe then it’s an option , but as it stands now , no .

Quite possibly - doesn't he have enough problem working out which colour fuel nozzle goes in the tank...?

Ummmmm

EWS? Fuel strips? That wasn’t the odd one, that was nearly every bike! What did they do about it?
Nothing!!

The trauma of it all would probably account for your current unhealthy interest in mixing with men who ride Harley Davidsons then? Part of the recovery therapy I presume.

:D

Ha!
I think it’s called growing old Tricky ...!!

Did you get your KTM dealer to set the suspension up for your weight?

I take you have read this in some magazine :blast

Any time I’ve bought other brands I’ve been disappointed. But at least I’ve tried the alternatives.

Some just cannot admit they screwed up and made the wrong choice, always better to try alternatives if you can, and then you have the knowledge to speak, I for the moment am happy with my GS but only time will tell if the love affair continues, if things go wrong I usually move on to other pastures......:hippy

Wow, if only I had known this before I would have bowed to your superior experience :blast

But on the plus side I do believe your claim that your fast street riding :tarka is totally different to track riding :augie

Now, putting our disagreements aside, I genuinly do hope that the 1250GS turns out to be exactly what you want, just be careful what you wish for :thumb

Absolutely. :thumb

I said all along that if the KTM wasn’t as good as the GS, I’d sell it and chalk it down to experience. A test ride wouldn’t have been long enough for me to decide, as it wouldn’t have been fair, due to me being an avid GS fan. Not quite on the level of our American colleague on here, but I was somewhat blinkered, and will be the first to admit it.

I’m glad I made the jump, and understand if others aren’t prepared to take the risk due to fear of the unknown/ worries about reliability & residuals, but for me it’s the best move I made.

I’m sure I’ll be back on a GS one day, but not until the current raft of issues has been addressed.

Problem is though Nutty, if they are bringing out a totally new GS the cycle of problems starts again, I got an May 2017 model no TFT hoping that this model was the one that had all the problems sorted, for the moment all is good, but only time will tell. :D
