And here is why...Yesterday I finally had the chance to ride a fully broken in R1300GS ! Disclaimer it did not have the sports suspension or the lighter forged wheels how I would have specced my bike but it was fully optioned including the Akrapovic exhaust option. It was in Triple Black and IMHO looked good enough to buy it...LOL Not a fan of the radar boxes and missing tail light though.I compare it to my 2019 R1250GS with sports-suspension , Tractive shocks ,cast wheels and BMW Akrapovic exhaust with the baffle removed.First seating position and comfort is as good as the old one. Also the stock windshield is as good as mine equipped with the slightly bigger windshield from the 1250GS Adventure.I also wanted to ride the bike with bags and topcase on to see how the high speed stability above 120mph is where my bike starts to wobble. My real only gripe for my bike.But...luggage is not available yet until they have fixed the problem that is taking off the key only if the bags are locked safely on the bike ! OK here my impressions while they are fresh...The engine of the 1300 vibrates quiet more than the 1250 as felt in the bars at certain rpms.Low down grunt of the 1300 is less as when I just fed the clutch out like on my bike it just stalled trying to pull from a light...No problem but it needs a little trhrottle.Power above 6000 rpm is more as in the first 3 gears it lifts the front accelerating WFO...But at 8000 rpm the party is already over which is kind of disappointing as another 1000 rpm pull up to 9000 rpm would have been great ! Gears 5 and 6 are definitely taller and the bike struggles and all it would do is 139mph without bags which is what BMW advertises. On the same stretch of road the S1000XR I rode reached 159 mph ! Filling up the bike later tank range was only 139 miles....As for handling around town it felt like the proverbial mountain bike but at speeds lets say 65-70 plus it steered nothing slower or quicker than my 1250 GS.Hard steering imputs where lost as much as in the trellis of the 1250 as you could feel the flex. The sound was meh despite the Akrapovic pipe.It definitely needs a full system without the huge premuffler or the device from Unit Garage to keep the flap open at least to make it sound louder/deeper.Mechanical noise coming from the engine was about the same.As also the clutch an the transmission was maybe a hair more positive.Liked the sports screen on the dash and the tank compartment is practical too when having to pay tolls...Braking was about the same But I dont like the fact that the foot brake is linked to the front which makes tight turns on the friction point between clutch and rear brake...Impossible !
So would I buy one ? I must say since I have a still nice 1250 definitely not because after 12 years I feel that BMW did not lay the benchmark higher.Less grunt down below combined with taller gearing makes the bike not more fun.Less sound neither.Handling about the same but Smaller tank...Why ? Connected to the front foot brake is not good either and why for what reason ? All the new bike has more power above 6000 rpm that makes it proper fast in the first 3 gears but around 8 its already over...Thats pretty much all the new 1300 has over the old 1250.For me its not enough as I think it needs another 1000 rpm on top and 3 mm more stroke instead of 3 mm less to give it more Torque and more power to pull the taller top gears and get the tractor pull on the bottom back ! And of course a 24 liter tank to have 200 mile range no matter how hard you ride. And please de-link the foot brake while the linked hand brake is great ! The aftermarket will take care of the sound...LOL
Looking forward to the R1400GS with all the kinks worked out...LOL
