Another GSA WC ride report but with a question?

Jb your side of the discussion will always be pretty obvious and probably right but hey ho if you want new each to there own, in a few years when the money is tight for me I will be doing what your suggesting.

I always used to buy new bikes, of course I did.................but then BMW started producing bikes that I didn't want to buy:P

I used to get some pretty good deals, back in those days............however the bike trade was simpler and ran in small shops with less staff then

You used to get looked after more, I guess

Nowadays most bike shops have either shut or turned into retail motorcycle emporiums (not bike shops) - big glass palaces with loads of staff and all that needs paying for in 2014, out of bike margins and parts and service work

So the deals are maybe not so attractive and bikes have risen to the heady heights of £15k+ for a BMW GS/GSA/RT and PCP's are pushed where the cost of the bike isn't necessarily 'talked' about, it's the monthly repayment.....................say £200/month you can have this or this or this:rolleyes:

It's not my kinda biking anymore.....................i'm more interested in where I can go or what I can do (ferries/hotels/trips)

Sure it's a hobby and we spend money on it, why not.........................but i'm not in the habit of throwing the 'baby and the bath water' out to chase the latest new, spendy, 'must have' trinket or toy

ESA/Enduro Pro/Gear Shift Assist/Traction Control....................is not on my personal radar of desires

Perhaps i'm at a different stage of my biking journey, having had bikes for nigh on 40 years and I'm more content with what I have and not what I want

I can understand others, I used to be the same & who enjoy a new bike or new model......................good luck to them

However what I refuse to do is blow £3/4/5k every 1/2/3 years changing my bike for a very similar one to the bike i'm trading in, when the p/x isn't worn out or i'm not bored with it ..............now that is dead money

Real or fictional pub talk?

A year old bike, with 10000 miles, which cost c.£14000 new, getting £1750 less to p/x or 'buy-in'.....................unless it was some sort of enhanced compo deal, sweetened by BMW

I find that hard to believe:nenau

It's a real deal JB. He had to leave some of the accessories on the bike, such as panniers, Akra and Nav, but looking on here second hand, you can pick that lot up for a reasonable price, so he probably still got around £11k by the time you take that off the deal.

Yes, apart from a steering damper.:rob

No it is not the same.

If it was then why is it that the crash bars for the later 2014 model DO NOT fit the 2013
On the 2014 you do not need all the spacers to fit panniers
On a 2014 model you can fit a quick shift but not on the 2013

And the shifter compatibility? Are there no changes in the clutch? Is it only the GSA with the heavier flywheel?

The 2014's are compatible with the shifter, and in 3 weeks there'll probably be another update on all future bikes knowing BMW, but they'll hardly worth spending £3k to change for. My point is that I can't understand doing 3000 miles in a year, then spending thousands of pounds for what is essentially the same bike.

It is only a little bit more that what you paid to 'reject' your bike from what I remember, so now he has the same as you

It's hardly the same scenario, is it. And the cost to reject mine was in the hundreds, not thousands.:rob

Maybe he wants the steering damper and the quickshifter :nenau There's plenty of 2013WC owners who have changed to the 2014WC for a variety of reasons yourself included. OK, in yours and many other cases the reasoning was due to a quality issue or other type of failure, but it wouldn't be the first time a UKGSer has chopped in a year old, low mileage model for this years new colour scheme. And if it comes with some extra's that can't be fitted to the current bike then perhaps it's a future proofing opportunity as well.

Ah, you qualified it now:thumby:

Makes more sense - new in 2013, a TE Bike was £13800, Akra say £600, Panniers say £600, Nav4 say £500 - so £15500 or so OTR

Cash offer £12250

So £3250 or thereabouts for ........a) minus b)

The devil's in the detail, Nutty:thumby:

I bet it was a highly polished 'keeper' too.

I've got a good one as well! That's two of us.

I was curious as to how much to swap for a 2014 model.
Reasons were as follows:
1. I live abroad in Japan and the 3000 miles is what I can rack up on my home leave.
2. Bought the LC 2013 GS, before I retire back to the UK at the end of the year, as my last bike. I normally keep my bikes for 3-4 yrs
3. No real issues with the bike, gearbox could be better but it's not a major point, and hopefully a solution is not too far away.
4. I was curious as to how much to swap for a 2014 model.
5. It turned out to be above my budget so my 2013 will be my last bike, that's perfectly fine with me. SWIMBO won't let me change once I'm on a pension. I'd have got away with before I return home.

So no drama and the point of my post was that I found it hard to believe what "Nutty's mate was offered even if it included accessories!"

I'd advise you to call round a few dealers, and not taking the first offer that comes along as gospel. The dealer in question is not in Surrey, so may work on lower profit margins, but for the sake of a few phone calls it could be worth your while.:thumb

I got offered a lot more than 9k against a gsa but not as much as nuttys mate! But decided to keep my gs.

My thoughts on the prices of these bikes is if someone gave you 15K cash in a wedge could you built a better bike from scratch, flog it and still make a profit. My point being if I was given 15K to build a bike it would probably look like this:-
