I've just won a 2620, hardly used, on ebay for £65. Bargain methinks, but then I notice it doesn't have Euro maps :blast

Where/how can I get these?

I'm a GPS numpty btw, this is the first I will have owned or operated.

You can buy them off garmin but not cheap

You will need to register you ownership on the Garmin website, requires serial number of the unit. You can then order the mapping and an unlock code will be issued which will be unique to your unit.

You should also have a DVD with a copy of the Mapsource PC application - did you get that with the GPS unit?

It should have come with European mapping usless it's not a European version.

What counties are covered by the basemap?

Greg

I won it this afternoon, so I can be more specific late in the week, hopefully.

It does come with unlock codes, and I've just seen another 2620 listed with 'N America' maps, so I'm hoping this is a cut 'n paste ebay thing when the seller lists the GPS.

comes with all books unlock codes and leads.

bought for a motorcyle trip that never happened and as sat in a cupboard since.

Fingers crossed, anyway.

Yup, it was an ebay typo. It arrived this morning, with UK and Europe maps.

I'm off to play with it :D

The 2620 has an IBM MicroDrive, rather than solid-state Compact Flash, these can be destroyed, usually at the most inopportune moment, when used on a bike due to vibration and shock. ISTR that one of the versions of the 2620 had a hatch that you could open and then swap the MicroDrive for a CF card, the MicroDrive was built to offer cheap large(ish) capacity storage when a 256MB CF card cost £100+, they have the same interface. They were very shortly made redundant when flash cards plummeted in price.

It does seem to have a flap at the back. I got it open today when I was looking for the interface for the smaller end of the USB cable.

Are these the same CF memory cards you can get from ebay for about £10?

My numptitude is boundless. The 'flap' at the back is the adjustable mount. The Manual doesn't have any sign of a place to stick a memory card, and the slightly cocky lad from Halford's couldn't see one either. And no port for an ear-piece.

Bugger.

The port for the ear piece is on the motorcycle chaging cable, as the connectors are on the same place as the power lead goes.
The 2610 has the flap for the cf card.
If you are very carfull and I wouldnt bother unless it goes wrong you can take the 2620 apart and replace the internal hard drive which is a microdrive with a solid state flash drive.
The disadvantage of the 2620 is that its usb connection is only usb 1.1 so loading maps etc takes an age. So if you do ever replace the drive inside then preload the maps on the card prior to the install.

Thanks bowser; that explains why I can't find the ear-piece connector, as I don't have a bike charging cable (yet).

If your using it in a car the car power lead has a loudspeaker on the cig socket connector, the actual units have no speaker or audio jack.

Yup, that looks to be the case; tear-dropped shaped speaker on the car cable.

Anyone reccomend a vendor for the bike cables?
