Hi my lc has now done 900miles and goes in for 1st service next week , has anyone experienced clunky gear changes mainly 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, hope it gets better, but overhaul a wicked machine,

Mines been fine. But having the first service done at 900 miles won't have done you any favours.:rob

Why's that then? Mines going in at just under 900 miles. Max suggested in manual is 750 miles. Can't believe another 150 miles will make that much difference.

Each to their own, but mine went in at 600 miles, as I want the running in oil out of the bike as early as possible, then onto fully synthetic. If the manual says the max is 750 miles, you may be risking future warranty rejections if you've ignored this.:rob

Think I've forgotten how to change gear :nenau the clunk into first is normal but I cannot get a clean change 2nd/3rd and 4th tried it all ways. Current mileage 1440 first service at 730.

Only problem other then gears which may get better with mileage is chrome on l/h header seems poor looks like series of pinholes on surface will mention to dealer when passing.

BTW Disc edges are painted black so no rust yet:bounce1

Doesn't sound right to me, the gear change is just fine on my bike - apart from the characteristic 'clunk' into 1st.

You may be right Mr Eng I'll stick with it for a while and see how it goes, I did mention it to Astle's tech when he serviced it.

It does seem different from when I first rode it in fact I remember saying to a colleague within the first week how slick the change was.

I was away touring and stayed a bit longer. need to get back to dealer as the 1st service was included in the deal. Dealer confirms no problem.

crunchy gearbox

My gearbox is a real dissapointment, crunch from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, ok after that, always slick on downshifts.

Sometimes mine seems crunchy 2-3-4 but then other times it just snicks in.

If anything, I think it's improving (or perhaps it's me and I'm still pre-programmed to the TC?). 900 miles so far.

I think there may be a difference in free play with the electronic throttle. If I positively close the throttle between shifts, the problem seems to go away.

I cant seem to go from 1st to neutral, no matter how gentle I kick it up it hits 2nd mostly

With 2074 miles recorded and running in dynamic mode it does shift better I think it's a combination of bedding in of both gearbox and rider also in dynamic mode it works the throttle in sync with the hand more or less:nenau

Same thing here, seems it slips into neutral from second OK, I also have a HD Streetglide and have the same issue on most occasions. Wonder if it is a wet clutch thing?

I have a bit of a theory on this, there is also a thread on ADV rider about the same problem.
So here's my theory.

Having owned many many BMW's over the years I've found that lots of them "appear" to have a clunky gearbox, but if you ensure that your foot is tucked right up against the gear lever and apply light pressure just before disengaging the clutch, it will just snick into gear when asked.

On the test ride on the new bike I felt the gear change was a bit clunky, so I tried my usual clunky gearbox style as described above.
It was having no real effect until I realised that the nub on the side stand was actually stopping me from getting my foot right over and actually fully under the gear lever.

I believe from what I've read on ADV rider, that folks who like myself ride on the balls of their feet, appear to be experiencing this problem more than those who ride with their instep on the footpegs.

As have many new owners across the pond the first thing I'll be doing on delivery is to bend the side stand nub out of the way.

As I said it's just a theory but it appeared to work for me.

As you snick from 1st to neutral spin the revs. Just a little blip and just as the blip has peaked and starts to fall .... snick ... :thumb

I am seeing the same problem, but with mine it’s ok when cold but gets worse after 20 mins in traffic.
580 miles waiting for 1st service
I begin to wonder if it’s a clutch drag thing as the oil gets hot, its worse than my HD or triumph at the moment.

Into 1st and from 1st to 2nd is hopeless. But after that, put some pressure up on the gear lever with your foot and keep it there, rev her up a bit, then a small and quick (and I mean small and quick) twist down on the throttle grip, with or without a tiny pull in of the clutch (not all the way to he grip, just a couple of cm), but preferably without, and the gear should shift up nice and smooth.

What about on the way down?

gear changes

Hi just had mine 1st service done at AJ shipley ,and mentioned about clunky gear changes upward 2/3/4 ,they checked it and said it was normal??, also tried the demo bike that had 3500 miles on clock and was no better , so they said come back when done 2/3 thousand miles || think this is the nature of the new gearbox and prob will have to live with it , but we all need to contact the dealers if you are having same problems so that they can feed back the comments to BMW,
On the subject of oil . i have been informed that the new lc does not run on fully synthetic oil but now a semi synthetic , so be carefull ,also mentioned about heated grips not to good but they also said this was normal, Aj give fantastic service though ,
