A faulty gear position sensor - not showing any gears whatsoever - does it affect fuel consumption or how engine runs. 2011 650 gs twin
Started biking in 60`s on bikes without gear indicators, so could I manage without it? Cost new £140-150

No - all connections clean and greased with silicon grease - checking between the 3 pins there`s no continuity between any, in all gears including neutral - so it looks as if the sensor is well and truly shot.
It`s happened all of a sudden but haven`t ridden any distance since, will try a run tomorrow and see how it goes

Should be plenty of 2nd hand options out there to replace it with, if it is a dead sensor.

Took the sensor off - the tracks inside were very badly worn away - so ordered a new item from Motorworks - putting the old one back was almost impossible, lining up the female T with the gearbox one.
So I removed the center piece from sensor and bolted it back in place and reconnected the cable, just so I could use bike without losing/damaging any parts.

When I took bike out for a try, lo and behold it indicated all gears correctly - but only when moving, stationery it was blank, puzzling!!!
