More growl!

agree, the old saying "loud pipes save lives works for me "

How about a new saying..........."loud pipes piss people off?"

Seriously, we need to maintain the best 'PR' with the non motorcycling world that we can. We are significantly out-numbered by the four wheel brigade and all that loud pipes do is help ruin our (already) tarnished reputation.

We must remember that we share the roads with huge numbers of people - it is not our road and it isn't their's. We just have to do what ever we can to put ourselves in the best (defensive) position at all times.

The truth is, loud pipes are offensive to most people.

I used to live in a small village in the UK that was bi-passed and every freekin Sunday had to put up with a barage of noisy bikes trying out for Silverstone - sorry folks - but ****ers the lot of them.......bit strong??

Now I live in a small village in New England without a bypass and every freekin Sunday have to put up with the 'Harley girls' with their ear splitting pipes:blast

I know this subject has been discussed many times before and will always divide people..............but I haven't ever voiced my opinion on it before - so there!:augie

Thinking about it, the blipping the throtle thang has worked for me on a number of occasions...............................

.......................mainly 'cos I can never find the stoopid horn button on my GS (a serious piece of cr@p design IMHO) :D

And, yes I have done that IAM thang and I have a 'pipe' with the baffle out.

Andres

PS Still think boxers sound pants loud :o

I think Boorman and McEwan are doing PR for the motorcycling world better than anyone can..if thats what you want. Lighted farts and all. Not my cup of tea. I prefer the unwanted minority meself:cool:

Motorbikes are offensive to lots of people loud pipes or not.

Harley's all part of the wonderful 'motorcycling world' and most of the people who ride them are 'normal' members of society.:augie. get on your bike and enjoy it. I like the sound of a loud v-twin, be it a hog, VFR, Guzzi, ducati........

there so!:D

Hi,

I modified my baffle recently on my fazer FZ1, it was a Mivv can and was nice with the baffle in, but too loud for a residential street with it out.

What i did was cut a peice of the length of the pipe that fits inside, just cut a bit off then try it, i ended up cutting about 2 inches off and the noise was then inbetween loud and very loud and still looked road legal.

Hope this helps

i didnt mean LOUD ,,,, i meant that id rather hear a bike than a sowing machine , i agree the really noisy pipes need to go they piss the wrong people off, nothing wrong with a bit of noise, but not too much, if u piss em off then, thats just cos you are on 2 wheels

I've done an advanced course with IAM, but there's still idiots who pull out/open a door when you're filtering, being a bit louder makes them notice you.

Schtum - edinburgh? local to Dublin?

I am always open to others points of view, and also agree that we all differ.

but IMO,

1. If someone does something silly like open the door in front of you, the brakes are the best avoidance, not the throttle.
2 the horn is there to warn other road users of your presence, so if you can see that the guy hasnt seen you blow the horn to make him look at you. If he cant see you you are not in the right position to be seen and are not riding as well as you could!
3. Sorry to be boring but we should all be responsible bikers, LOUD PIPES scare the shit out of children in town, annoy the hell out of most people and invalidate your insurance, in theory opening you up to potenntially 8 points ??

:):)

Yep, it's all a matter of opinion, the whole loud pipes save lives arguement has been around for as long as I can remember. Personally I wish I could have a little button on mine, so I can cork it up when I need to. Instead I end up having to really coast past horses and the elderly.

That said mine's certainly not as loud as some I've heard. If it was I'd of put the baffle in by now. I can ride it without earplugs all day without a problem anyway.

What? Speak up :shout :D

yeahbut,

have you modified your slippers too?...... :augie

:D

A Police Man that I know said to me, "Keep it loud, that way we can stub out our fags, finish our coffee, get to the gun and nick you. I just cannot believe that anyone would want to advertise the fact that they are breaking the speed limit from 2 miles away"

Don't ya just love a good duscussion..............?

Nothing (or very little) beats the sound of a saucy single, a rampant twin, a cheeky triple, a rasping four, an out of sync five or even a smooth six.........but the comments along the way have been "how to make the bike louder than the horn."

First off, my I suggest that if you have trouble locating the horn button in an emergentcy you make yourself more familiar with your chosen mount and it's associated controls before entering out onto the highway?

Whilst I agree that there are some that already dislike motorcycles we are only making it worse by making 'extreme' noise.

So, maybe the first thing to do is decide what amount of noise is acceptable? Surely the manufactureres have already done that - I reckon that when I get on my GS it has a rather satisfying growl already........very nice in fact. But when trundling along, yes, it does indeed remind me of a sewing machine - a very large sewing machine I might add......but a sewing machine none the less.

What we need to avoid is the ear-splitting noise that so many would be motorcyclists assume that everyone else loves?? Maybe these are also the folk that think Joe public enjoy the crap music booming from the cars of others?

If you can hear your exhaust over your horn................it's too freekin loud!:rob

I am lucky enough to have an "arse in the air" Ducati 748 (853) with Arrow exhausts and an 08 r1200gs.

Blip the ducati in traffic and people know that you are there, blip the GS and no-one notices.

5000 miles on the GS since April and the exhaust needs addressing.

Nautilus horn works well but i agree that the switchgear is rubbish.

I have Remus headers and Remus can with baffle removed, good sound and easily noisy enough to let our brothers in their tin boxes here you coming when filtering.

Rubbish you say!! Depends what you are used to? BMW have been using the same layout since 1983..............what's the matter with it?:ronno

I have only managed to use the horn once, after a myopic driver recently failed to see me. I have a Scorpion titanium end can without baffles. By the time I had taken evasive action and found the horn button he was already driving off although he then heard the horn, realised his error and waved an embarrassed apology so I waved back to say 'ok and thanks'. Totally agree that the horn switch is arse, I tend to use the left indicator a lot by mistake thanks to having 'blind cobblers thumbs'.

IMHO the using horn or having loud pipes are useless, cage drivers are often oblivious to all the other traffic around them let alone a motorcycle. They wouldn't see you or hear you if the bike was ablaze and you had a loudspeaker for pillion playing ride of the Valkyries. Think for them, ride according to the conditions, leave a little in reserve and you'll be alright.

If traffic doesn't do a 'Moses' when you blip the throttle on your GS, I guess it'll take you all of 5 mins longer to get where you're going, no hardship really.

:thumb by far the most reliable method of staying in one piece.
big horns and conspicuous pipes are only helpful in a nudist colony... :green gri
