Munros - where to start?

I'm coming up to Scotland in late September for the first time to walk a few of the Munros as I've not done any of them before. Which ones would you start with? I'm looking at either Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park or the Cairngorms, staying in youth hostels.

I've spent years meandering around English and Welsh hills, mostly in winter; is the scale of the Scottish mountains that much greater?

Given your experience, you should be fine, especially since you're not planning on doing the Cuillin Ridge in winter or anything similar. If you're going to Loch Lomond, Ben Lomond is a pretty easy afternoon stroll.

Yep, I've got a book but it's at my mates at the moment! Just wondered if anyone had any particular favorites?

As for the Cuillin Ridge... that looks entertaining! However, as I'll be climbing solo I may exercise a little discretion...

Ben Lomond as a warmer to start with,then head round to Arrochar where you have Ben Narnain and Ben Ime and the Cobbler (which is a Corbett ) you then have Ben Vorlich and Ben Vane just up the road park at Loch Sloy power station for the last two.
But I suspect you have a plan of your own David

It is something I aim to do starting next year. Apart from Ben Nevis more times than I care to remember for charity of 3 National Peaks events, I've them all to do !

Do the ones at the top of Glenshee......you start from 2000 feet ish!!

The scale IS different from Wales and the Lakes, especially in some of the more remote areas...Kintail, Knoydart, Torridon etc, and it can snow any day of the year, especially on the Cairngorm plateau, where the weather can be arctic rather than european. But welsh and lakes hills in winter will have set you up for the job.

I was reading something a couple of nights ago on the web that someone had written about their list ticking of the alpine 4000m summits. He wished he's started with the most difficult ones first because partway through he realised he was getting too old to be able to do them later on!

Agreed. Iconic. And you are climbing from sea level. Did it a few years ago now and bottled out of the final pinnacle. Heights don't usually bother me but that day was different. Must do it again and finish the job!

Further over towards the east coast is Kirriemuir. Near there is the Glen Clova Hotel (at Glen Clova) which has a bunkhouse. You can knock off 2 munros quite easily from there: Dreish and Mayar. A nice, easy walk to break you in and some great scenery

Agreed. Iconic. And you are climbing from sea level. Did it a few years ago now and bottled out of the final pinnacle. Heights don't usually bother me but that day was different. Must do it again and finish the job!

Yup done quite a few of them, keep slowly ticking them off. The drive has always been climbing so they have been an added extra

Yep, as mentioned in post #7, but it's still a much better climb that many Munros. So are Askival, Streap, Goat Fell and several others. Got to give the man options
