Some advice please before i head for the local BMW dealer.

Have recently been having problems changing gear on my 35k, 2005 GS .

Can affect different gears at different times, but usually initially can engage lower gears (1/neatral/2/3), but will not budge further. After a little running can then engage higher gears, but lower gears can then be problematic (especially 1st).

There seams to be more of a problem changing down, than up, with a small tap-up with the foot on the gear, helping to engage gears when dropping down to lower gears.

I am a complete idiot when it comes to mechanics, so any advice would be appreciated (have read about a similar problem which referred to a gear linkage sticking) - desperately hoping it's not a new gear box.

At risk of scare mongering, get it checked ASAP by an expert. If a bearing has failed, the costs will be huge if it stuffs the gearbox.

Thanks for the advice.

So sounds like whatever the issue, if i get it checked out soon, may be only a parts / maintenance issue rather than a gearbox replacement.

Some peace of mind until i see the dealer !!

In all likelyhood, the gear linkage is seized and it needs taking apart and lubricating. It's a simple job but your dealer will do it in no time if you aren't sure of what to do.

There are some ball type joints in the linkage between the lever and the gearbox which can get full of crap and need maintainence now and then to keep the gearchange sweet. I use a bit of copperslip which does the job nicely.:thumb
