R1300GS / the good the bad & the ugly

IMO totally pointless motorbikes for our roads, (unless your some track day god) 100-130BHP is the sweet spot,
They are basically investment trophies. Limited production run… I’d hate to keep it insured every year and stay awake at night worrying about it being knicked.

People are so hung up on chasing bhp figures, when less is more fun because you can ring its neck whereas 160bhp becomes hard work, great for overtakes but a lot of restraint is needed, power outweighs the talent.
You sound like @Stevie4scoops, not in the bad way. He recons he can have more fun on his 390 Duke than he does on his 120GS.

The bike will be either the M1000XR or the M1300GS…Both are very exiting propositions for people who want either 4 cylinder or boxer twin sportbikes that can be used and ridden not only on the track…! If it is the M1300GS I would not bet my left nut that then tank is any bigger but my right one that they raise the tpm level and give it another 15 hp…!As even Ducati brought back the desmo valvetrain to give the lane MS V4 the RS treatment and more beans…

Quite surprised they kept the oft-maligned/hated rear light setup (the back lights in the indicators)
Also surprised they are still doing NAV6 prep...I know there's a new version coming (supposedly) but again the NAV6 is often maligned/hated, and I expected them to fix that.

Many of us (the people I ride GS's with) do big tours. The NAV is a key tool.

Almost every GS'er I know thinks that later rear light config is a cock-up, it's a frequent Q on the forums as how to fix it!

Seems BMW had the ear plugs in on these 2 things methinks..

I use the Garmin base camp which allows me to follow the routes I made not how my phone or app decides , for some reason every time I try to use the phone based apps it’s telling me what to do rather than me telling it what I decided on the computer, weeks back. The garmin is a great system for the rider who wishes a route made by reshearch , emotion and input from the rider and the bit wher it does not decide for you .
I’m not sure if I may have read your original post as you meant it , so if I have k apologise.

It’s not going to be cheap to service

shaft check & lube every 20,000 km with the valve check

new shaft at 80,000 km

see around 4 mins

haven’t watched the rest of the video :nenau

Checking the shaft drive and lubing it is easy though and cheap...
As for replacing it, if the above is done regularly it's probably safe as houses. Besides most owners never see 80k on them.

Neither are serious issues imo

I agree, just be interesting to see how much they charge for the check and lube

Hoping my driveshaft does over a 100k, well over half way there.

If lubing the shaft is easy (as in 1/2 hour labour) that's not bad. Same with replacing the shaft every 50K miles, if it's a $200- $300 part that's not horrible , but $500+ would be. In this day and age good chains and sprockets can last over 35,000 miles and Harley dive belts over 100,000 miles.

New driveshaft at 80 K sounds alright as preventive maintenance as also by then you would have worn out about 4-5 sets of chains/sprockets…As for power 100-130 hp are not enough but a upright bike cant really use not more than 170 hp which is powerful enough to be fun and not get boring going to 125 in about 8.5 seconds while a real superbike in missionary position gets you there in 7 seconds…Everything more is not doable because of laws of physics because of wheelies and traction control that cuts power out to prevent them ! But from a perspective of perception of speed there is really no difference in excitement between a S1000RR or XR so for the street 160-170 hp are definitely enough where more would trigger the TC to prevent wheelies…As for the Harley taillights I think there are not only ugly but also dangerous as car drivers will be confused if you brake or turn…Stupid ! Also the foot brake triggering the front brake and instead of making the tank 1 liter smaller it should have been 4 liters bigger…But I guess they want to sell the ADV with the whole christmas tree thrown at it instead of the regular GS…Also what no one mentioned that the gearing is taller which might have a negative effect on roll-on…A test ride will give the answers for sure !

Clifton on powerful bikes like the S1000XR even the golden long life chain from Regina that BMW sells does not get more than 15K miles on my buddies bikes but then they dont put around either!

But anyways the bike released next definitely is the M1000XR…One of my buddies is getting one and I can wait to try it…Hopefully bags will fit…He asked me if I get one too and I told him first I want to see if the M1300GS gets 15 hp more and a 17 “ front wheel…LOL

Also it would have been nice if they would have incorporated the GPS in the TFT screen as also the new bags seem smaller than the old ones…Hope the sport display can be retrofitted to the TFT if the 1250 GS…LOL

I quite like Basecamp too (altho it can be frustrating at times), it was the perceived lack of reliability in the NAV6 hardware I was referring to... I'm on my 3rd NAV6, and I know a lot of people on here are making the jump to XT / XT2 because of the known reliability issues. Personally I have stuck with NAV6 on my GS because of the wonderwheel, but gone XT on my V85TT for the improved benefits...

Sheesh, all a bit beyond my personal knowledge and skills; I 💕 Boxers, but know I no longer have the disposable income to achieve my requirement’s which have now become pipe dreams.

However, many of my thoughts were once similar to those of Boxerlust, reignited recently seeing that Kenny was offering a long distance alloy touring-tank for this in the FS&W section..🤔

She looks lovely, beauty in the eye of the beholder I guess; may the lust for Boxers never die.. :thumby:

Bucephalus…When you see whats going on and how they have made energy so expensive and succesively created hyperinflation with new wars every month and CO2 BS the love for Boxers is my happy place like as a kid when my dad bought me a new bicycle every 6 month or so…So when after 11 long years I remember when the then all new LC came out the goal post gets not moved as much as you wanted you get slightly disappointed…And I would never talk about looks as this is personal taste but real things like smaller tank , blinkers as tail lights or linked foot brake are just plain stupid ! Or if you decrease the stroke to reduce the piston speed then at least raise the rpm ceiling to lets say 10000 rpm and give us more Power at 9000 rpm instead of capping it off like before at 7700…Especially since the gearing is taller and will eat power so to speak…I guess if you like it smoother, softer you like it and if you have short legs it s is better too but I am afraid they removed to much rawness and sanitized the boxer to the point that it might not feel like one anymore…I remember 1994 when the R1100RS came out that sounded like Nothing and left me so cold that I ended up buying a new R100R instead…A testride will tell and I hope Bennetts will do the same with the new R1300GS compared with the 1250GS as when the compared the new R1250GS with the R1200GS and I knew I had to get one and switch the skim milk for a full fat one which was a huge improvement as in less mechanical clatter and much more Torque ! Only 4 liter too small of a tank , death wobble at speeds above 125 with bags&topcase and 20 missing hp on top my only points of critique to make it perfect…Seems like 2 out of 3 are still remaining…Love the sport screen and the coin pouch in the tank though that should have been lockable on the new bike though…LOL

Also BMW had a super cool advertising campaign many many years ago…Die Boxerlust auf der Baja erleben as also I loved Boxercup which was IROC on Porsche Carrera RS or later Camaros on 2 wheels…Great racing on great bikes…R1100S ! Hopefully BMW brings a new S and brings Boxercup 2.0 to WSBK or MotoGP…That would be so cool ! Win on sunday buy on monday and use next saturday on a spirited tour or trackday ! Being almost 58 I have still a good 10 years left but swiss time is running out but I could still buy another 3 boxers…ADV,M/XR,S ! Otherwise I had a good run on 19 new ones so far !
