Rattling engine and seizing exhaust flap.

Is that gap there to allow heat expansion? Or lateral movement in some way?

Would filling the gap create unwanted pressure on engine casing?

mmm, good point. However, and only IMHO, I dount the gap is for heat expansion as the rattle tends to be restricted to the cylinder that fails rath than both. As for pressure the same applies. I`m not saying this is the case but it could be a fair assumption in another parallel universe that the shaft case hardnening has failed (due to penny pinching).

As for machining a brand new shaft - thats within my abilities and resources but as I said I`m going for another answer first!

Seems the shaft is certainly the problem

Mine had 4 new cams which didn’t fix the tapping

Then they changed this lot which fixed it

The Axle/Shaft is Part # 11318529744 at €27.35 so cheap enough to try if you’re out of warranty

No 10 is also used in the 1200gs

So do those exhibit the same rattle?

If they do, there may be a link, if they dont, then it's something else

Also Real oem shows 2 per cylinder head? whats the diameter on the other and the hole it fits into?

Does that one make a nosie ? if not why not ?
 
If the axle is the culprit then wouldn’t there be wear marks on the minor diameter or the shoulder and a tendency for the hole it fits into to become oval?

I would have thought so but not being able to examine the dia or the hole it fits into I couldn`t say for sure. What does seem unarguaby evident is the clearance!
 
Surely it's only a consumable if you actually consume it.... what I mean by that is buy it, own it, use it until it's totally spent.

But that's not what happens is it.... rent it, use it carefully under contract with limited mileage, as it isn't your bike, then give it back. That's not a consumable.



I disagree.

In 3-4 years time, it'll still be a fully working BMW R1200GS Adventure. Just like it was when bought new. Yes it'll have wear and tear but it'll still be my bike, doing what it was bought for.

In 3-4 years time, somebody else will have handed over their bike then given another £7000 for a new version, then lost another £3500 immediately in tax...

So they're another £10,500 down and still in the same position as me, riding their bike around with their mates :D (plus however much they throw away in Finance interest)

Then at the 4th year point, they'll hand over their bike, give another £7000 for a new version and lose another £3500 immediately in tax..... Now £21000 down :D

Even if my bikes was actually worth £0 .... I'd still be better off :friday

It consumes itself!.. what I have posted before is 'Engineered as a consumable'... ie, not to last.. we have machines out in the fiels used 24/7 and they have been out there for 35 years plus... these things are not Engineered to last...

on the other posts, a gap to allow it to expand 0.3mm... it would have to be very hot to expand that much.. and let's not forget the hole expands at the same time... 0.3mm clearance is massive on a part like this... I would of thought 0.05mm max..
 
Just looked in the garage, bike has not consumed itself....................:D

You never know whats going on under those cam covers... it could be internaly dissolving away ;)
