Replaced '07 with another' 07

Finally got my bike replaced, it has taken almost 3 weeks but I found a very low mile, fully restored bike.

18000 miles from new and completely stripped down and powder coated.
Wilbers front and rear (less than a thousand miles ago) built for a man of a similar size to myself.

I am over the moon!

Check the rear brake master cylinder. If it's got the old flimsy dust cover see if you can get a later bellows type. The old flimsy cover allows dirt into the seals which eventually scraps the cylinder..
 
Looks nice, rebuild after 18k though??
The previous owner (from the lad I bought it from) lived by the sea, didn't use it much, so all the usual corrosion set in. The lad I bought it from has a little bit of OCD and took it on as a labour of love.
It's a fairly small community over here, my independent mechanic was mechanically looking after if, so I have it's history (all bona fida)

I'll struggle to keep it this clean.

Well wear dude.the black looks great...was it tallage that done the powder coating. The guy that bought my 05 wants to tidy it up over the winter

I believe it was , yeah.

It's a massive amount of stripping and rebuilding.......you couldn't pay someone, it would cost a fortune.

When I think about the 08's and 09's I have been viewing over the past weeks, there is no comparison.......... this yoke looks like it just rolled out of the factory.

I had the frames powder coated on my bike. It's indeed a lot of work but TBH not beyond a DIY mechanic. The main issue is BMW's strange ways of assembling things. You fit the air box to the engine then spend 1/2 hours trying to get the rear subframe to line up with the bolt holes. FFS the air box has to be fitted to the frame before its fitted to the engine. So you take it apart and do it properly only to find the starter wiring wont fit because that should be connected and tucked away BEFORE the rear frame goes on to the engine. Not technical just bloody annoying.

I had the swing arm and FD and fork triple clamp coated in a sparkly light charcoal silver. TBH dark grey or black would have been even better.

Picking this one up in a few hours......... I reckon it's going to be a keeper.
Sargent seats and that's the job done.

Have all my little protection farkles from the previous bike, Mudsling, Fender extender, crud catcher... etc etc.

TBH, Im no fan of the crud catcher. It's beautifully made, but I believe chasing the wrong problem.

My bike front cover corroded around the belt cover bottom bolt leaving a big sack under the paint. When I got the belt cover off (complete with the top two screws sharing off) the whole area was corroded. No crud got to either of those areas. When I removed the cover for stripping and painting, the central area (where stones should hit it) was clean. However at least four of the lowest cover screws had corrosion running from under the screw heads. It was a mess.

Brother's bike was polished and mollycoddled from new. So much so the engine was still tight at 12000 miles. He had a crud catcher so didn't worry about cover corrosion. But based on my experience he took it off to have a proper look. His was even more badly corroded than mine - again around the retaining screws.

Both now have the retaining screws coated with anti seize paste from end to end. Mine has stainless screws (also slathered) with copper washers under the screw heads. To date the corrosion has not returned.

The paint is uber hard so if you ever have to strip the cover it will need to be dipped. If metal is pitted, clean it out really well then etch prime, fill and paint. If it's not pitted you can powder coat it.

The front cover has been done and coated black.

Not sure the actual process but it looks good (for now)
 
Whip the screws out one by one and cover the threads and shanks top to bottom with anti seize grease. That should stop galvanic corrosion setting in.
If using marine grade grease be careful some is so slippery the bolts are likely to shake loose.
