Scotland's --- west coast bike trip

I am starting to rack up a fair bit of travel and can honestly say that the Northwest of Scotland is fantastic. The roads are built for bikes, during the week, the traffic is sparse ( just watch out for coaches ), the food excellent and the people are very welcoming ( and have a great sense of sarcastic humour ). Most Tossers will fit right in:augie

Just one word of warning and that is for the Scottish midge. Take "Avon, Skin so Soft or my preference is the jungLe formula.

Cracker place to take you bike and spend a week.:beerjug:

Teamin thats why we go In May and September as the little critters are nowhere near as bad.

After spending a lifetime being tortured my midges, I've tried everything. While Avon works reasonably well, without doubt the best thing I've tried yet is Smidge.

Smidge. I love the name!

Now, islay, 14 distilleries? Where to stay?

Another couple that aint been mentioned are the run over the Lecht its a great road

Loads of good roads over the east coast including a great run over Glenshee as well...

7am this morning the Lecht was a bloody nightmare! 2 degrees, breath fogging inside the visor, heavy thick fog outside it, I could see about 10ft! And was a bit cold for this time of year. But, normally, a cracking road :thumb2

I was the same yesterday pishing rain and freezing. Like you say normally weather permitting is brilliant.

What had you heading over the Lecht so early on a Sat morning Nothern Jock??

Hi there,
Couple of web-site links below for information:-

First one covers the Outer Hebrides and was created by one family with an huge experience of the area and some superb photographs.

The other is what I consider a very useful tool for local information over the whole of Scotland.

There is a book called "Bikers' Britain" by Simon Weir available on Amazon for £12.68 and probably also in standard bookshops, although unsure about Switzerland.

Book has 200 pages of which 40 - 50 pages are devoted to Scotland.

I do have the book and intend to refer to it on a little Scottish bimble sometime soon.

Had to get the Bonneville sorted, engine management light was on, needed a software update so had to go to Shirlaws
THought it looked brighter so came back over the Lecht instead of going via Huntly and Craigellachie - mistake, just as bad as earlier! Still, made it nice to get to the Strath

What a great thread. I hope to do the west coast for a few days starting the end of May as long as it's not pishing down. Fingers crossed the weather gods smile on Scotland the end of May/beginning of June.

Good film... That whole run from Durness to Ullapool on a good day just cannot be beaten.

Off to S & N Uist, Harris & Skye this weekend....flying trip with some English bods..out from Oban Sat am, back to Skye for Sun pm..and what does the forecast say for Weds? Wintry showers!!
