Stelvio Duecento Tributo purchase.

As a potential Stelvio owner I am loving this tread.
Try one , I am really enjoying mine , so much so that my R1250GSA has done 300 miles (170 miles to go for it's service and 3 miles to get it's MOT ) this year and will be getting SORN'd at the end of the month , plus £1000's cheaper than a new R1300GS

Yep, I have a GS as well as the Stelvio.
One up, it's almost always the Stelvio
The Mrs prefers the GS tho, she says it's a better pillion perch.
The Stelvio is my weapon of choice for more minor roads (for instance the Ireland Atlantic Way). The GS for mile munching on bigger, faster journeys or chasing on with mates with faster bikes

I keep seeing a Stelvio like this in Portrush (NI). It rode past in the town centre but too far for me to wave at the rider as I want to ask how he’s getting on with it and where he goes for servicing or issues as we don’t have a dealer in Northern Ireland / North of Ireland.

With my wifes renal issues it means she has not toured for a couple of years so to be honest the GSA is wasted , I have just purchased a set of Givi panniers for the Stelvio and will be visiting Austria next year , the wife will fly down for 7 days and I will meet her there.

Why have I never thought of that!

I did the same a few years ago, I rode down to Portugal, checked into a villa, collected a hire car, picked up wifey and kids from the airport, had a week together then I rode back.

Best I get back on topic

3 week update. 3062km.

No issues this week. No oil leak. Nothing fallen off. All good.

Fitted the Mistral exhaust. Perfect 👌🏼. Suble but a good bit deeper and overrun pops more pronounced. Exactly what I wanted. Not sure it it €500 better. But its better. Engine feels a little more free. Best i can describe is an old car back in the day. When the diaphragm leaked and it didnt advance the ignition timing with revs. That feeling when the timing was a little retarded. Compared to now, thats how it felt before. And I was happy with it before. Now itd just a bit looser, free'r.

Installed the new levers. Brake lever has made a big difference. I was thinking about this on rode home. How important ergonomics are and I wonder hoe many bikes get poor reviews just because ergonomically and suspension wise its not set up for that rider. The front brake was too powerful and snatchy at times before. Because even in closest position it was still too far away. With the new lever and bringing it closer. There is much more feel and modulation. So much so the front end of the bike feels different trailing the brakes entering fast sweepers. Has more feel for the tyre and suspension also feels better as the bike is loaded more on entry so deeper in the stroke.
Clutch lever. Maybe ill change back to standard. Its the opposite amd doesnt feel like an improvement. I think standard lever but slide the master cylinder up the bar a bit so I csn use 2 fingers on the emd of the lever for more control but when clutch fully in it clears my 3 fingers on the bar. Kinds like a stubby lever- but with more feel and progression.

Also fitted the frame plugs. Small touch but looks better.

Again. As I keep saying. There is something about this bike. I adore it. These changes have made it more "my bike" , or fitted to me. But overall the package is fantastic. Can literally go peg to peg at 150kph, playing with it, make it move on exit. Feel the feedback on entry. Clearly a V4 Tuono or a different genre would kill it A to B. But the Stelvio would be close, leaving big black lines and scrape marks and the rider loving every minute.

Also did some investigation.
The standard exhaust sounds great. This is because its basically an empty box with baffled walls. End pipes are open to the box. Entry pipe is blocked and perforated. So there is a gamble there that someone could open a small hole in the blocked cap. Gradually opening it until the noise is suitable? But basically it would be a straight through pipe. I believe this would effect power etc as exhaust gas pulses need to be controlled. But interesting to see how little is inside.

Week 4 update. 3879km.
I was in Sevilla with work for 2 days so dropped some overall km. Then Friday I'm on London for 1 days so again. Overall km will drop from usual.

No issues this week. Moved the new levers slightly to get better feeling.

Monday we had heavy showers. So bike got wet for the 1st time. What an absolute disaster of a bike to clean. I'm sure someone told me the GS is the same. But so many nooks and holes that catch dirt and water. For sure- 100%, ceramic coating the engine and coating regularly with SI02 products is needed. On the left sode of engine there is a hole which creates a little water bath. I can see how some UK/EU bikes lose engine paint if left with salt and water. The catalyst also. Just sits in a hole in front of the rear wheel catching water then baking any dirt. Spent 2 hours cleaning after the ride.

But in the wet it was fantastic. I was probably twice as fast on this than my R1300RS. Tyres were decent. But combined with soft suspension and using Rain mode. Bike was great fun.

Now a week has passed I'm undecided on the Mistral. At times I think its too loud. I like quiet bikes. I dont want police/public/anyone hearing me coming. Or hear the bike in the distance in the hills etc. I do like the deeper tone. But it does seem little loud. I always ride with earplugs. And a few times i took the bike a short errands without and didn't like it. Unsure. Not totally convinced on the look with the stubby pipe also. I like the standard exhaust look.

Dealer called and arranged a booking. Moto Guzzi will repaint the swingarm where the paint has worn already. Seems a bit ridiculous if they paint it then do nothing to prevent it happening again. But I'll go through the process anyway.

Almost dropped it a few times after fill up. Exit gas station and stop at junction and bike feels really heavy and hard to keep upright if road isn't flat. Maybe I still need to get used to a tall adventure style bike. But at least twice I thought it was going to be on its ribs. But fought it and held it up.

Also found on the data. The pegs grind themselves hard at 46ish degrees on fill tank but with low fuel they grind at 48-50 degrees. I have some good data from app when playing with 50 deg lean, 4th gear, with decent % rear wheel slip. Most fun I've had on a road bike.

Been riding now with panniers on constantly. Just for convenience really. But starting to like the look.

Found a small screen glitch. In heavy rain on Autopista I lowered it to allow wind to clear water from visor. Then found screen wont raise again. Slowed down to exit and test and it started working. So I think there is a speed limit threshold for raising. It needs to be under, say 150kph to raise. Also on a private test road it did 227kph in 5th at just over 9000. So maybe more to go in 6th down hill.

App data. I think its interesting as it shows the fun that can be had. Obviously its not accurate. But interesting to see.

Good left right series of bends.
Revs drop a little in transition left to right.

Little dip in speed at transition
143kph

Interesting this one. 80% throttle driving out of left but trying to hold it stable on right. Interesting to see the complete throttle close on transition on left to right. This is maybe why it feels like it turns so well.

39% throttle

5% slip on left, regains grip on transition from left to right then back to 4% on right driving through.

50 deg lean side to side. Interesting to see how quick the transition is. Holding the bike at lean longer on the left, then right is more of a turn and stand up ready for next corner.

One thing i did find interesting was seeing the tilt times. Obviously riding an adventure bike, 19" front and 80/20 tyres you cant just bang it on its ear. You can see the gentle feely tip in, gently loading the tyres, then once its turned. Stand it up and drive it and let it do the hokey cokey. Turn is smooth and gentle giving it time to settle and feeling what its doing.

Completely different riding style. But when someone asks you how you ride a bike. You cant explain. You can only say you feel one bike asks for different things to another. But it was interesting to see what is actually happening.
Screenshot_20260930_202409_Moto Guzzi.jpg

The Mandello is coded to stop the screen being raised at 120kph IIRC, and I am sure its the same on the Stelvio.

One thing you can do though, if you are somewhere in the menu and want to jump immediately to the screen adjustment option, just do a "long press" on the rider mode switch, it will then switch the dash straight to screen adjust mode.

Yes that makes sense. It was only on Autopista I noticed it. I've been using the long mode press alot. Great feature.
I had a day off today. Took the bike for a longer 200km run to add more km and try more things. It was a great day. Had the same issue as before with the tyres. Where the rear pressure is 2.7- 2.8 it moves alot. But 3bar seems to help it a bit and stop so much movement. This must be a Michelin thing with the carcass. Played with suspension more and made it worse. So went back to what i was running but little less rear preload. Only 1-2 clicks. Fellt better but caused some issues with the center stand grinding which really upsets the bike when it touches. Trying to ride it with less lean but the corner dictates the lean needed to make it turn. Tried a few times to hold it up a bit and it just runs wide.

Unsure about tyres. Had a couple of moments on slower 2nd gear tighter turns where getting back to gas mid corner it felt like it was going to fold. One of those moments where you stick your foot out automatically because the front feels so vague and bars go light like its folding. Had a think on ride home about maybe moving to Continentals or Dunlop Mutants. But raising the grip will just raise the speeds and lower the fun, plus its already touching every day. It would need the center stand cut back and higher pegs. Also its a package. The tyres need to match the chassis. Its easy to over tyre a bike and it just instantly finds the weakness in the suspension and chassis and causes problems. So for now. Undecided

Tried again with TC modes. Now it makes sense. The previous attempt on the slippy hill had no lean so the IMU wasnt inputting and data to affect TC. Hence. It allowed it to move alot and it was too steppy in levels.
At lean. 3rd gear etc trying to make it move the TC is good. Not amazing. But good enough. At full lean picking up to exit, TC 2, full gas in 3rd lets it just feel floaty. TC1 lets it move enough to be fun but then as per upright, kills it hard and makes it pump on the shock. So probably TC1 but just ride with it rather than leaning hard on it. To lean hard. TC2 is good.

Tried rear abs off. I dont have the skills for that. It feels fun on entry skidding and the bike snaking but I keep letting the revs drop too much before pulling the clutch, so it stalls, then then engine has too much compression to bump itself, combined the the slipper clutch. I just kept snaking about then almost coming to a dead stop with the engine off

Modes are great. Have them set up linear.
Sport TC1 and power 1 (play mode)
Road TC2 and power 1 (general mode)
Tour TC3 and power 2 (this is good for commute, throttle is super smooth)
Rain was good......in the rain.
Off Road. Not really tried that apart from when trying to do wheelies. (Needs work. Once I work this out I'll post. 1st is good but too slow and agressive. And I can't get a good one in 2nd without feeling like its battering the clutch.)

Slipper clutch. Again this is fantastic. Very very good. So much so I feel its better to go back gears using the clutch so the slipper kicks in. Rather the using QS/blipper. QS going back gears is good for left right twisty 2nd 3rd gear roads. More open progressive roads i find using the clutch and slipper makes entry super smooth. You can still be going back gears as you turn and it doesn't upset it.

One thing I noticed on this and the BMW. It feels flat on 95ron. Always use 98. But today the petrol station guy put 95 in it. Didn't think anything of it until about 50km later I felt like I had the throttle on the stop alot. Like every exit. To the stop. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and bike felt a bit off. Thought maybe it was the heat but then remembered. It happened before also on 95.

Plan when I return to work next week is to chop an angle off the center stand to stop it grinding. Then as before, just let the pegs lose what they need to.

Oil leak has returned. Same place. One small litte run. But bike had its ribs kicked in for 2 hours today only stopping for fuel. So it was a big ask. Lets see if it continues.

Overall. As a bike, complete package. The motor, chassis, spec, tech, price, looks. I'm blown away. As a do iy all one bike garage. What a bike.

Thinking about cutting chamfer here.
20261001_205427.jpg

Pegs need either cut back. Or raised. Cant find any aftermarket higher pegs yet. So maybe cutting chamfer also will help.

Bike is only 4 weeks old. (4000km now) . So need to think of something of its going to last 2-3 years and more!

Week 5 update. A little late . 4356km. Been traveling for work and had a few things on so dropped a bit.

Another week with no issues. All good.

Put standard exhaust back on. I'm getting old. I prefer it. I like to be able to play in the hills without attracting attention. Mistral is for sale . 1 week old!!

Had to take my wife to a few appointments. First time with pillion. Went 100m down the street then added 8 clicks of preload as bike felt like a chopper. Made a difference and felt alot better after.

Basically. I cant ride. In town and with a pillion it felt terrible. Top heavy. Felt like every junction I was going to drop it. Sussed it a bit batter on the ride home. I sit quite far back on the seat. Which is wider and higher so more difficult to put feet down. Moving up the tank before stopping helped alot.

Also max lean with my wife was 21 deg. As she doesnt like the bike leaning. (Although she has a new Vespa Primavera and rides like shes at the TT!) The combination of added weight. Super slow town riding. Plus pillion high up weight took alot to adapt to. I understand more now why these guys with pillions fall off on the Stelvio Pass videos. Different riding technique altogether.

Went out tonight alone for a short blast. Bike is beautiful. I'm trying to work out what it is about it. But its just a combination of everything really. The chassis works so well for what it is, but also the engine matches it. One doesn't clash with the other. Can really play with it and apart from the center stand problem it inspires so much confidence and is alot of fun. 115bhp but the way it makes its power, combined with torque curve and bhp. It never had that flat feeling up top of the revs like other twins. The cross over from where it ruins off the torque curve then bhp takes over makes the whole rev range good.

Wheelies are improving. Basically you have to be forceful. Want it to come up. Needs full throttle in 2nd 60kph and a decent throttle close then full gas and clutch flick. Can feel its heavy and slow to come up but also that is great because its not surprising. 1st is tricky. Aggressive and snappy.

Been riding with panniers constantly. They still feel flimsy. No usb charging. No light. No power.

I'm in Italy for work next week. Return on Saturday the have WSBK Jerez on the Sunday. So again km will drop more.

Tried to book it in for a service as it'll need done in 4-5weeks. Email and 2 WhatsApps and still no reply 3 days later. Got to love Andalucía. Tried another dealer. 2 days no reply.
Things are different here. If i turned up face to face they give the service like a friend. Try to message. Email. Call. Nobody takes any notice.

Totally agree regarding the panniers mine came with them and they have been on the bike once , no way are they suitable for touring so replaced them with a set of 36 litre Givi Alaska panniers and racks, much more substantial and will be easier to tour with

Agree. The BMW RS ones were better made. But also €400 more.

The Guzzi ones look good i think. But theyre so flimsy I struggle to close them at times. They bend so much rhe dont align. You have to move it about to get the latch to line up and put the clamps across. Also the mounting system where you have to remove the rear seat then basically hit them with your knee towards the rear of the bike to remove them. Just doesnt seem like how it should be from factory.

Dealer I bought the bike from confirmed a couple of customers had lost a pannier and the rear seat on their Stelvio , the Givi ones combined with a cheap (under £100 new) Triumph branded Givi Trekker Outback topbox, all in a few hundred pounds less than the standard Guzzi panniers should be fine for me touring

20261007_112731.jpg20261007_112631.jpg

For sure more substantial. The think i like about the standard ones is i can fit a helmet in each side. Or for example next weekend at Jerez. I can take a change of clothes and leave all bike kit, helmet, boots, jacket in the panniers. And be free to walk about all day.

Yeah I did hear of guys loosing a pannier. I do think they'd need to be a bit half retarded. As you can see where the hook needs to be. And if its not in place either the rear seat doesnt clip on. Or it does and the front of the pannier isnt in the mount so it flaps about loose.

But yes. Having to mount them. Then yo behind the bike. Knee them into place. Put the seat on. Wiggle everything. Its not quite 2026 standard.

Just a bit off topic. Those look like fair bit of weight and the rear preload adjuster looks to be wound right off. Very little silver showing. Doesn't the bike feel unstable? Even with no panniers and 83kg fully kitted i found it needed 9-10 clicks/turns. Then another 10 with a pillion.

Not ridden with them full but for solo with top box the suspension setting is okay for me, . I am a bit spoilt ,however, as my r1250gsa basic now has full Maxton suspension which is excellent
Standard Guzzi rear shock feels a bit crude on the particularly badly surfaced roads around here so I may replace it long term , probably with a Shock Factory unit
