Struggling with Basecamp?

.....the last mile or two to the hotel in a strange town, they are great, but as far as plotting an entire effing holiday of twisty roads or motorways, they are shit.

Whether the roads are mototorways, main roads, minor roads or goat tracks it's relatively easy to plot a route along very specific roads from A to B or A to Z, via every letter in between. Having completed the plotting process, which only requires effort, you'll then have an excellent companion to guide you road by road and turn by turn, maybe over 100's of miles. Depending on how you have drawn your routes it will take you through cities or around them, right to every 'must do' view you have been told you mustn't miss and then right up to the front door of your hotel, all without you lifting a finger too often. I have just completed the creation of a complete lap of Germany, spaced over 15 days of travel and 'days off' to use in early September. I'm confident that it will guide us - down the roads I and not the device have chosen - with pinpoint accuracy on the last day just as well it will the first day and every day in between.

Bods will differ as to what software is best for plotting routes and to some degree or another which map sets might be better than others, but that's just semantics. Few if any of the many people who regularly use their devices to their full capabilities will say that they are shite for plotting entire holidays or lengthy distances, irrespective of the roads and destinations chosen.

Please could you throw some more light on why you are convinced that:

as far as plotting an entire effing holiday of twisty roads or motorways, they are shit.

Step by step guide to copying web address from iPad motogoloco screen to email please - from someone who has actually done it as opposed to the ones who just think it can be done.

Speak to the horse:

The fellow is also present on the forum but apparently not as subscriber; presumably he'll be happy to answer all and any questions you might have.

Really?

I thought you were an engineer?:D

Not only do i think it can be done i have actualy done it, it is so simple even me with my very limited experience with apple products can do it,

i will presume a few things in this very long tutorial, and this is you are able to get to the point on the screen where you have the pannel/tab open with the option to export, share, like , edit. delete. i think the default colour of the buttons is orange, you cant miss them. i will also presume you do know how to copy and paste using your ipad, because if you dont the next part will be difficult.
Tap the orange share button another pannel/tab will open in this you will see your map URL, now underneath it you will see a facebook logo and a twitter logo with the wording (share on) next to them, do yo see them. tap the twitter logo and another page will open showing the Full web address URL, now as i said before i will presume you know how to copy and paste, and thats what you do next, just copy the portion of the URL that you need this will be the part that starts https and its end point will be before the word via. once coppied open your email app and paste the link and send the link to yourself.
if it is you struggle with this, as i am not the best person at putting things down in words, if you PM me your phone number i will gladly talk you through it at my expense of the call.

Hope this helps lee.

Maybe someone else could try the above method to confirm it works for them as well as myself, because some people may think its impossible to do.

Thank you, Lee.

I don't use MotoGoWhatsit but the instructions are clear enough.

Just in case a bit of the process gets away from anyone:

It's also possible to 'Select all' and then 'Copy', a method I used on my iPad to copy the embedable link to display the U-Tube video.

Wapping like i have said, I am no apple guru, i purchased my ipad 9 months ago and this is only the third time i have used it (i can not get on with it), and have never owned any apple products before, so i did struggle a bit, but i felt sure that if i could do it someone with a lot of time spent on an i pad would get around it far easier.

Ok how does one export the route from Motogoloco on an iPad to a desktop machine, ideally need to go from iPad to Nav 5.

I am giving it a quick tryout to see if it is worth the effort, but it is already proving to be problematical - do you have an answer to the above questions?

Just seen this. Create a free account, then save whatever route you're planning. Then log in on any computer, and all your saved routes will be there.

Apologies if anyone mentioned this already, but I can't be arsed to read the whole thread again!:D

You still unfortunately need to have Basecamp installed. Have it running in the background whilst you do your route on Motogoloco. When you're done, save the route and then click the GPX export button. Immediately switch to Basecamp screen and your new route will be sitting there in the left hand bar. All you then have to do is highlight it and click the "upload to my device" button at the top left of the screen. Assuming you have your Nav V plugged in, the new route will immietely be transferred to it. It always sounds more involved writing it down than it is. In reality, it's very quick to both plan the route and transfer it to your device.

No you don't.

Shut down Basecamp, and don't have it running on your computer.

Then follow these steps.

1. Plug your Nav V into your computer
2. Wait for the computer to see your Nav (my iMac can take a minute or two)
3. Find your saved route, or the route you're currently planning in motogoloco
4. Click "Export". At the top, it even has a TomTom or Garmin icon. Click the Garmin icon and it will send it straight to your Nav. It takes a second or two to send to your device, which I thought was very quick, and wasn't convinced it transferred. But it had.
5. Disconnect the Nav from your computer
6. Turn the Nav on, and it will see the routes, and ask if you want to import them. Click yes, then go into the routes app on the Nav V, and it will be there.

Now the final step, this is the really important one. Delete Basecamp from your computer, and pour yourself a large celebratory drink. Your frustrations with Basecamp are a thing of the past.:beerjug:

it was indeed mentioned in Post #19 For all the others who can not be arsed to read the whole thread:beerjug::beerjug:,. and doing it this way may be better for that engineer fellow who is finding the other way, Quote (Would be good f you could copy the whole web address from the iPad but one cannot, unfortunately) .

I was going to post this but was unsure it could be done on a mac not having ever used one, but do know you do not need any piece of garmin software on pc to do it. although the way of going about the transfer is slightly different on pc.

This is what it wouldn't let m do hence Lee, or was it Wapping, saying leave basecamp running. When I clicked the Garmin link it kept telling me I didn't have Garmin downloader plug in, or something like that, even though I had Garmin express installed. Anyway did a route last night, copied to basecamp and transferred to NAV V so happy bunny

Ok, got the cut and paste thing, wouldn't it have been so much easier to have the choice of email along with Twitter and Facebook, like most iPad apps? Cutting and pasting the URL is a fiddle for fat fingers on the iPad.

What would be absolutely brilliant would be to go from the iPad to the Nav 5 directly, that would be a killer app. (Bluetooth?)Going iPad to a memory card ain't great for the Nav 5 because you have to dismantle the iPad to get the card out.

Try it with go loco in Acapulco it is a fiddle and it isn't clear that one has grabbed the entire URL - anyway my fat fingers have now done it.

Thanks to all the helpful Tossers:)

Glad to see that small issue is now sorted.

With reference to the transfer of files directly to the ipad Quote (Going iPad to a memory card ain't great for the Nav 5 because you have to dismantle the iPad to get the card out.) i presume you mean dismantling the nav 5 to get the card out.

Ipad to nav 5 is not possible at the moment via bluetooth.

By the way i might be wrong about this but do you not have to own a GS to be a Tosser, if so i most certainly am not.

Yes dismantle the Nav 5, yes sorry my bad :) direct iPad to Nav 5 via Bluetooth (or cable) would be fab because carrying an iPad on the bike is so much easier than a laptop, PC or Mac.

ive took the advice/abuse of the mapping gods on here and tried to get my head around basecamp..im fuckin useless at anything that requires any sort of concentration and would just get by with asking for routes for a journey, but its finally clicked, it really is piss easy to plot/edit routes in basecamp, im no expert but since ive put some effort into plotting/planning routes ive been on some amazing roads i would never have found

Been using this software for nearly 2 years , it is as nutty says really simple to draw up routes . Peeps can get lost trying to save the route to the nav but when mastered it's simple. It defo works on my Mac book

I design the route, and save it on my Mac book desktop renamed as the required route
I plug in the nav and open that up up . Look for the GPX file folder
Drag and drop the route into here
Unplug the nav
Open up trip planner ......voila ! There it is
