the best bike i've ever ridden

For me the new bike is 3 bikes in one.

1, Quicker, sharper handling, sleeker looking, can be honed about when the need takes you no longer any need for me to have a sports bike this fulfils the hooligan element in me.

2, A competent and capable tourer, with a fantastic top gear range and response which allows you to bimble about or to overtake at the flick of the wrist even when heavily loaded and with a pillion (yes I did test this on my demo ride)

3, Greater on and off road ability than myself which means it will take me anywhere that I'm prepared to go. I think the bike is so much easier to control even at low speed than the old one and personally I'd feel more confident on some of the trickier to me stuff.

To put a bit more detail on that, I was more comfortable riding the GS up to its limits (which includes, in the right circumstances, riding it off the edge of the rear tyre) than I was on the MS, which meant that in circumstances when I actually wanted to push as hard as I could, I'd probably be faster on the GS.

You must be some riding God, if you can achieve that on the road:rolleyes:

I don't hang around and I also ride with some quick riders on this thread too, some quicker than me and none of us have ever come close to that on the road, even on the hottest day, the stickiest & smoothest of tarmac or on the twistiest of Alpine Passes:eek

I cannot think of anyone on any GS could achieve that on a public road, here or in Europe:nenau

that is a very good point. i mostly need to change down to overtake briskly. the new bike has vastly more stomp and it would probably be unnecessary.

Please sir, please sir :rob

I've done it on a Pyranean switch back, I even got the back to step out, quite a way infact :bounce1

I didn't stay on though :blush

Andres

I've high sided the GSA twice, different bikes and once in the Picos and the other in the Black Forest

The rear let go quite a way, as the following riders told me

I stayed on both times:bounce1

I think that too many people get too hung up on the spec of the new bike, 125bhp, leds, dynamic esa, traction control, plastic etc.

What really matters is that BMW have put together a really, really nice bike which is a joy to ride, just like they did in the past with the 1100,1150 and 1200.

Bikes don't last forever and technology moves forward, you can stay with the old technology is that's your preference but at least try this fantastic new bike because it is as good, if not better than the old ones were in their time.

Once people finally get away from the 'you're just bitter/jealous/a fossil/a nay sayer/a troll' type sentiment tripe you can get excellent posts about the new bike, just like this in fact. Nicely put :thumby:

If that's a general feeling amongst the toilet owners I'd have thought the Multistrada would have been the weapon of choice considering the GS is now a 95% road machine with few pretensions of off-roadability and in the same niche as an MS.

You probably have missed the numerous reports, reviews and videos about off-roading with the GS LC, which it seems to do very well, thank you. :clap

Power is your friend - the quicker and easier it is to accelerate, the safer you can be because you aren't afraid of braking due to the feeling of needing to maintain momentum.

It's not about going 150 mph everywhere, it's about how one overtakes safely, and regains lost speed. It's why traffic police cars have minimum performance requirements etc.

IMHO

Fook me, how slow do you think an 1100, 1150 or any other decent sized bike is. That is without doubt one of the most stupid things I've seen yet. I'd agree if we were talking a 50cc moped here, but I have never needed more power than the 1150 has and certainly never felt like I couldn't brake for fear of losing momentum :blast:blast:blast

I'd also say that you need to figure that a competent rider will understand the capabilities of his machine and only overtake when it is safe to do so. This applies to whether you have a 125 or a GSXR100000000RRRRRR.

Get a grip :blast

You obviously haven't seen this video of the multistrada, that seems to do very well, thank you :blast:D:D:D

It all depends on what you're used to. I found my GS lacking two-up after my K1200S. My RT is just about quick enough, but I'd welcome another 15bhp and the considerably better roll on performance of the LC engine.

Until you drop one! Lots of plastic and soft radiators!
Previous 1200 was better, 1100 & 1150 better still.

Apart from the rich and famous, will anyone have the guts to do a RTW with fly-by-wire throttles, etc., etc.?

BOLLOX!!

It's called observation and preparation. That's how you overtake safely. Not by buying a faster more powerful bike.

I sincerely hope the "blue" in your username doesn't relate to you having any police riding skills.

If you feel you need another 15bhp to overtake safely you're making some dodgy overtakes.

I'm not totally convinced about that, the GS sits very high when dropped. Crashing into something is a different matter. I'll reserve judgement till more is known. For sure, this is an expensive bike to damage, I'd love to know what that LED headlight assembly costs.

The Multistrada is even more expensive than the BMW...gotta stop somewhere, and personally I'd rather have a BMW than a Ducati due to (possibly outdated) perceptions of other aspects including Duke quality control, clutch comfort, finish and reliability of electrics.

Plastics have been used on serious off-roaders like KTM for years. Light weight, flexible, resilient, easily replaceable. Apart from the fun of nasturtiums being cast I'm not sure the use of plastic is a valid criticism. Depends on the purpose of the component.

According to you, they wobble at 35 but once sorted they are good for 43-45 mph
:blast

Well I thought they were ok, but you lot have convinced me that what I thought was quick enough was obviously way off.

I'm obviously unaware what real power is having never ridden anything fast (I mean really fast).

All that power would surely make one physically sick:nenau I'm assuming it comes with some kind of breathing apparatus to stop the rider from suffocating over 50mph:nenau

I'm merely pointing out that to say you need more power is utter tripe. Ok, so it makes you feel fast in a straight line, but it is nothing more than that. A good rider will dispatch traffic through clever planning and riding wisely. I have owned 2 airheads and 3 1150 variants and a 650 dakar, none have held me back from making decent progress.
The 2 german ducati sportsbike riders who couldn't shake off a loaded 650 dakar for several miles of alpine pass will understand:augie lots of power, hanging off the seat, noisey exhausts......all means feck all. My 130 vs the 190sports tyres, feck all.

Now I'm not saying I'm a super fast rider, I'd say I was pretty average, but power is feck all unless you can use it. As stated earlier, if you need all that power to effect a safe overtake, you need to rethink your planning.

One question, has anyone actually taken this new bike, two up, full lugguage for any type of real tour i.e 7 days away from home doing some reasonable daily mileages?

Question two, all this extra power? when used what does it do to the mpg?
