Warning !!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't be such a dick! No modern bike, unless ridden full throttle to full brakes all the time, should have bare rear pads after 3800 miles! Another example, my RT had front and rear wear at 10% at 6000 miles service - also linked braking ('partially' - whatever the f*** that's supposed to mean :blast)

It's a very appropriate warning for riders who are used to having their rear pads outlast their ownership of a particular model of bike. So well done OP and thanks! Baja - go fold yourself back into your Power-Ranger suit and wheelie your minimoto/pocket-rocket up someone else's arse! :dabone

What he said plus, the average GS rider, goes on tour, that's a little bit further than the pocket rocket crowd's 2 mile trip to Tesco or local greasy spoon. If your average European Tour is 2500 -3000 miles, there ain't a lot of brake pad left for either side, or in your world to go on tour, do you have to change pads to go?

So grow up, it ain't the £30 quid, it is sensible consideration on a bike that's supposed to be unstoppable go anywhere, unstoppable could be true with no brakes.:blast :aidan

Before everyone gets all arsey and starts the usual shower of insults, perhaps there was a faulty supply of brake pads or they are just soft pads:nenau.

I've noticed on my GSA that BMW pads were very soft so I use Ferodo's from Steptoe which really last and give good stopping power. I use a lot of rear brake to steady the old girl and the current ones have done 18,000 miles and I expect them to do my next Alaska trip which is around 8500 miles before they need changing.

Try a different make of brake pad:thumb2

I think I agree with sgt Bilco,

A number of pads may have been pressed from the wrong brake material, :blast

I checked mine a few minutes ago, and thankfully there isn't excessive wear , I've done just over 4 thou miles,

Just my two cents worth :rob

How do mine look from the photos folks? Before the piss taking, I'm no mechanic.:comfort:D

They look about a third worn to me.

What's the rear brake like when used on its own? On my Hexhead I have to stand on the pedal to make it do anything of note.

Nutty, its difficult to judge from your picture, being at an angle ,

Just go and have a look square on, and also check if both sets of front pads are worn about the same, and evenly ,

I'll check out the original pad thickness on tuesday at the dealers,

Brakes a linked so you wouldn't expect having the same mileage out of them because you Do NOT control their wear fully as on previous bikes.

OP might be using brakes a bit too much or drag them and they will wear obviously faster, you guys scream outrage even thou none of you know the reason or have an issue with your own.

I am absolutely in awe of your skills and touring ability. I am only doing 32000miles a year half in the city , half touring.
Most of the time I do not have to change brake pads.
My previous bike done 70 000 miles in 27 months and I changed pads on the rear 5 times.
It wasn't the point to state how long they should last but to comment on exagerated WARNING thread that probably have nothing to it.

I like how you guys described my LC as pocket rocket but I bought GS and have no idea what you are talking about.

Even if my previous bike ZZR14 was your pocket rocket, I would like to know how with your enormous experience is it by you not a great touring bike

+

I personaly know 4 GS riders , non of them does more than 5000 miles a year and they certinally do not tour much , so your statistic is flawed by 75%

Calm down Baja .... It's a bike forum :D

Have you not worked out that most people on here talk complete bollox ... :nenau ('specially JB who doesn't know his arse from his elbow and the nutty mechanic who can't work out when his pads are shot ... :D).

I am calm.

Its not a first forum I have been to

I am new but already found out that the money I paid for subscription aren't really worth it as most of the forum threads for LC are commented by:

1. People who bought the bike and can't get over their old bikes
2. People who decided they don't like it before seeing it.
3. Patronising individuals who always have more experience than the next one

There isn't much helpful topics as you would have in other bikes owners forums, just constant winging and chair engineers contest
:beerjug:

Just read this thread and the pad wear on some of your bikes does seem very high.

Is there a chance the traction control uses the brake to stop wheelspin?

This accounts for very high pad wear and disc temperatures in some of the brake applications we have tested on mainly rear wheel drive cars with traction control enabled and lots of power to control.

As I recall. The rear pads on my real, original, hexagonal bonce 1200 wore much faster than the nfronts (which last circa 25,000)...and I replaced them with Ferodo ones....and a new rear disc about a year ago.
On 67 thousand and something now.

Look after your bikes!!

Whatever happened to having a good look round your bike while your cleaning it???

:rob

my first 1200GSA wore the first rear pads out in under 1900 miles. subsequent sets lasted much much longer. well, about 15K IIRC.

i don't really use the rear brake pedal much at all on these bikes as they are linked to the front, and additional pedal just brings in the ABS IME.

It's better than the TC, and scrubs the speed off quickly on the mountain passes

Will do:thumb

Needs a fecking clean, it's in a right state:eek:

I reckon 2-3k perhaps left

That was taken AFTER the big clean up:blast:D

What

Needs a fecking clean, it's in a right state
Yes: What is this cleaning you speak of?
In 50 years of riding motorcycles, I have never encountered it!
And right state?
If it's on the sidestand, it's in a left state, if it's on the mainstand, it's in an upright state, butI cannot think of any circumstances when it would be in a right state unless he falls off it.
Myke
