Which oil ?

Don't buy it its most likely the car type. and not JASO spec for motorcycles. if your not sure then get your dealer to do the service. car type spec oil will knacker your clutch.

Terry

It's exactly the correct oil
They sell a few different types including the Edge version for cars
The one I buy is: Power 1 Racing 4T 5W-40 & 10W-50

So's 2T but it's not for the LC...........

The JASO spec is the important bit, as long as Bmw haven't changed their recommendation???

The only difference is that the 10-40 oil would be slightly thicker when cold, but in this country it doesnt get cold enough for the real differnce to be felt, ie -10 and below.

The 5w-40 covers a wider range of temps than the 10w-40 however the temp, range for the 10w-40 is still well outside the UK's climate.

So actually it's not too hard :P

The only difference is .... :blagblah

The OP asked what oil to use in his 2013 1200 LC, this bike will obviously still be within warranty.

If he sticks anything other than the recommended 5w-40 in, and then for whatever reason has an engine issue (weather it's caused by incorrect oil or not), BMW will most likely be unsympathetic.... comprende? :thumb

would BMW arrange for a viscosity test for engine trouble? Another thought is that if you change the oil outside of the dealer network and a warranty claim arises, BMW may wish to see the sales receipt for the service items used? While it is under warranty have your dealer service it and for topping up 10w 40w will be fine.

I would doubt that TBH. BMW like a lot of manufacturers are constantly changing the specs of the oil they recommend simply because they have done a deal with this or that company. Why is a recommended oil ok one moment and not the next ? Its mostly a load of old shite, most modern oils are more than good enough for most bikes, theres nothing special about a WC compared to any other engine. Go on believing the hype if you like, like most other peeps.

Funny, innit? Since I joined this bunch of entertaining eejits almost 14 years ago, this utter bollix about oil has reared its head almost every single month since then.

Keep up the good work!
:D

Anybody know for sure which grade of oil was put in at the factory for the LC and removed at the 600service ?
Cheers

I agree - what is so difficult?, read the manual and use the oil that it very clearly states to use - the LC uses zero oil between services and even the most expensive stuff ain't so expensive that I am amazed that anyone would want to risk anything else on a new bike.

+1 :clap

stick to the ratings (SG/SL whatever) , JASO , MA2 , etc .

stick to the weight (5W40)

but Castrol ? haha . Loads of far better oils out there.

.

Interesting question there Den, it seems many folks experienced the gearbox/clutch problem after the 600 mile service..... sorry I don't know the answer to your question though.

Mine improved after the 600 mile service and has got progressively better - I only miss N now if my changes are lazy
