Local dealer has a GSA with just over 2k miles on it for sale. Bike is spot on.
Only trouble is the engine is pending replacement due to a corrosion issue.
Had the dealer not pointed out the hairline corrosion to me I wouldn’t have even noticed (and I’m fussy).
So if I go for it, it’ll be a brand new engine on a 2k mile bike. Engine will need running in. The standard remaining warranty will apply. The engine change will obviously show in the bikes history.
It’s fairly priced, but I was just wondering if there’s some sort stigma attached to this that would discourage future potential buyers when I come to trade in.
Anyone else been in this position or heard of similar situations.
I guess the only other playing on my mind is swapping engine isn’t without its challenges and you’re unsettling everything else in the process.
Thoughts (such as walk away, etc) appreciated. I’m undecided. :nenau

I would pass on it. Plenty of bikes out there. I looked a one for a BMW dealer 3 years ago with a replacement engine but I was spending £13.5k of my own money and wanted my bike to be perfect. I went elsewhere.

Agree, plenty perfect bikes out there. They could easily scratch the frame etc changing the engine

Looks like a win, win to me. Whats the issue with a replacement engine? You get a great bike with a new lump in for a reduced price. Mine was replaced at 2000 miles for a knackered big end bearing. Keep the history and I cant see a buyer in the future being put off by a MD engine replacement.

I bought a used K1200S which had a replacement engine, turns out it was replaced after a crash. Never had any issues with it at all, just need to remember the service interval is on the engine so the 18000 service was actually at 26000.

A new engine is no guarantee of no future corrosion, if you are happy to take the bike as it is you could ask for the price of the new engine to be taken off the price.

If the dealers mechanics have a decent reputation and not that of being hammer wielding cavemen then it is a no brainer, buy the bike.
You will then have a low mileage chassis with a zero mileage new motor that you can run in and know its full history, insist on a free 600 mile oil change and checkover though

I had a 2017 motor fitted in to my 2014 GSA under warranty due to corrosion (thanks NOG :thumby:) In my case the dealer replaced the complete motor but now I'm hearing of engines being rebuilt in house by the dealer and only the corroded parts being replaced.

I would be asking the dealer if they are replacing the complete motor or replacing the corroded components ?

When I eventually traded the GSA in for a 2016 Triple Black GS the selling dealer of the TB (Bahnstormer) tried to make a big thing about my bike having had a replacement motor, even claiming that it could be an issue for him trying to explain this away to any perspective buyer of my old bike, proving that some dealers can be right wankers when it comes to P/Ex time !

My only concern for your particular bike is that if the motor has corroded after such a low mileage what other corrosion issues could be lurking unseen

My suggestion is to go and buy an uncorroded bike elsewhere :thumb

What is it with you bikers, have a new engine and start from scratch excuse the pun ! Your can then look after the the lovey new lump, lovingly cleaning it. The technicians won't scratch (that word again) it. If you were buying a car and the seller say, its had a new engine, what's not too like ? Your all to concerned about mileage anyway, you only ride it for 5k and then trade it in for the latest one because BMW have added a new shiny bit. Ride the bloody things, that what biking about, not sitting in garage, use it have fun. My 1200 has 47K and it gets better each year, little or no corrosion and it has sat outside under a cover since new, though it is cleaned and lovingly cared for. Look after them, service and clean and they will in return give you hours of fun.

I agree and that’s what I’ve done. I went back to the dealer and had a closer nose around the bike. Glad I did because I saw plenty of other components that looked “ not good” for a 2k mike bike. I concluded that the bike has not been looked after, ridden in salt and not taken care of.
So, I found a 10 miles (pre-reg) for a few quid more. And, got a great trade in on on mine. I’m much happier, although it’s a shame that I couldn’t stay loyal to my local dealer - never mind :nenau

So do you honestly think that would be an option? What planet are you from
